3547.0. "Imtronics ProRam 1.8 (for the A500)" by NITMOI::WITHERS (Another Hallmark Moment. -Al Bundy) Mon Mar 05 1990 15:17

Hello all. I was just considering purchasing the Imtronics ProRam 1.8
board for the Amiga 500. It is a board populated to (you guessed it
:-)) up to 1.8 meg that fits inside the A501 space. It includes the
amentities, clock/calendar, and claims A501 compatability.

Here's the hitch..I called Memory Location (I work in Tewksbury MA and
dropped by and saw the board at Omnitek and wanted competive prices)
and they said they wouldn't carry it yet because they were afraid it
want' quite right (bugs, failures, ?).

So, does anybody have one of these and how well does it work? I just
had to give up my A501 and don't want to buy another one if I can get a
board to slide in there and hold 1.8Mb instead of .5Mb.

George,

I was speaking with Dave Haynie (OK, so I'm name dropping...;')
and this topic came up. He mentioned that a modification of the Gary
logic would be necessary to make the memory decode to the right
addresses. He mentioned that the implementation he had seen (no names
mentioned, sorry) used a "Gary Tower" to implement the extra logic.

I got the impression that he felt such hacks were not real hot.

3547.2Autoconfig or bust..,FROCKY::BALZERChristian Balzer DTN:785-1029Wed Mar 07 1990 04:4315

    Re: .0, .1

    Yup, Steven is right here.
To have more than 512K in the A501 space AND to have them
autoconfiguring, you'll need your soldering iron or to insert
intermediate sockets with the neccesary wiring.
And you don't want any non-autoconfig memory in your system when
that nice autoconfiguring HD-controller (or whatever) on your expansion
slot decodes it's memory space where your RAM is, since it has no
    idea of it's presence...

Thats what I was afraid of...looks like the insider board for memory.

    Thanks for info,

Remember, the Amiga OS does not Autoconfig (tm) C000000 memory, it just
notices it is there. Thus, no Autoconfig (tm) logic is needed to have
this memory automatically recognized by the system and neither is addemem
or other hack.

My understanding of what Dave was talking about had to do with the decoding
of the address lines that connect the A501/clone to the motherboard by Gary.

3547.5For 1.8 MB???FROCKY::BALZERChristian Balzer DTN:785-1029Fri Mar 09 1990 04:249
    Re: .4

Quite correct, however I believe (have to check the manuals on the
weekend) that this is only guaranteed (sp?) to work with 512KB and
not with 1.8MB (mirrored areas and such stuff).

Ah sooo! The memory map does show 2 meg there, but I am not sure
about the implementation particulars... very good point.
