3538.0. "KURTA TABLET PRICE BLOWOUT!" by RTPSWS::ZIMMERMAN (Whistlin' Dixie) Thu Mar 01 1990 23:01
No, friends, this isn't Drew Kaplan of DAK. I just thought I'd pass
the word that Softel Inc of Long Island is selling Kurta IS/ONE
12x12 graphics tablets for $345 each for a limited time only.
They're usually $395. The tablet includes all cabling plus a driver
for the Amiga. (You can also get drivers for something called a
"pee-cee", whatever that is, or for a Mac.)
You get your choice of one pointing device - corded or cordless
cursor, or corded or cordless pen. Additional pointing devices are
$100 each. The cordless pen is about the size of a large crayon and
takes five watch-type batteries. The corded pen is slimmer - closer
to the size of a regular pencil. The cursors have the usual cross
hair and multicolor buttons.
The drawing surface of the tablet is covered by a replaceable sheet
of thick plastic that lifts up so that you can slip templates or
backgrounds or whatever underneath. Unlike an Easyl, you don't have
to touch the surface to make the tablet respond, which means that
you can work through several layers of paper if you have to.
The cable plugs into the Amiga's serial port and requires a gender
changer if you don't have an A1000. There's an installation program
with an Intuition interface that you run to set baud rates, etc.
You can choose relative positioning (like a mouse) or absolute
positioning. The Kurta doc says that the IS/ONE can emulate
a Microsoft mouse, a Summa MM series tablet, or Kurta's earlier
Series I tablets, if you have the right drivers.
There's Manx C driver program for a similar Kurta pad in the Amiga
Binaries notes file. If you want technical interface doc you have
to order it separately.
I tried it out on Dpaint III and it worked just fine when the baud
rate was set at 2400. I haven't tried it with other paint programs.
Softel sells smaller and larger tablets for smaller and larger
prices. They take Visa and MasterCard and deliver in under a week.
