3509.0. "MSH - Shareware alternative to CROSSDOS!" by TALLIS::MCAFEE (Steve McAfee) Wed Feb 21 1990 16:12

    I've put MSH_15.ZOO in TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]MSH_15.ZOO.  This is
MSH v1.5 which just came over USENET. It claims to be a MSDOS
file system handler which both reads and writes disks!

Too bad for CROSSDOS and DOS-2-DOS if this works. I haven't tried
    it yet.

3509.1how much less than 30.00 ????SALEM::LEIMBERGERThu Feb 22 1990 03:3613
If I have time I'll look at it. I use Crossdos so it would be
    interesting to compare.
    >Too bad for CrossDos and DOS-2-DOS if this works
    CrossDos is 30.00 . I have the latest update,from the net,and
have talked to the tech support. Support is very good. I haven't
lookd to see what the ShareWare cost of MSH_15.zoo is but it should
not pose a threat to a product like crossdos. This of course depends
on the Price of MSH_15 .Of course some may use MSH_15 for free, but
then this would be no loss for crossdos eathier. I am looking for
a way to use the new 915 drive from CBM(3 1/2 HD floppy internal).
this would allow me to use 1.4meg floppies that can be read by both
    the IBM,and MAC II.

I looked at the files in MSH_15,and read the .man files. There
appears to be a great difference in the utilities offered by
MSH_15 and CrossDos. If it functions as promised it may be the way to
go for some, but I don't think it is my cup of tea. Remember I did
not run the program so I cannot make any statements on it's functionallity.
Given that both programs will give you the ability to use MsDos files
directly from your Amiga Applications,I think the commercial program is
much richer, and offers several options that will make life more
pleasent. I also decided not to run MSH_15 because I intergrate
CrossDos into my system at startup, an did not want to undo this
to add another filehandler etc: to my system. Istill desire to add
a HD floppy to my system. If someone determins that MSH_15 will
support this please reply so to this note.

Well I gave it a shot for a few minutes last night and ran into
one small problem but otherwise it seemed ok. When I did an
ARP Move command to move a file from RAM: to A: I got an error
message back that it didn't work. In fact the file did get
copied to A:, but the one in RAM: didn't get deleted. Copy,
Delete, Rename, etc all seem to work for me though. There
does seem to be an odd delay before it updates the disk however.
About 3-4 seconds and then it does its thing very quickly.

The read times seem to be just as fast as Crossdos, but I
    didn't do any timings.

bill, what great difference do you see from Crossdos?

From a user's perspective they look the same to me. I mounted MSH as a: on
df0: and b: on df1: the same as I had tried with CROSSDOS. Except for what
I mentioned above, it looked exactly the same to me. Having tried it I
would have to say that Crossdos does seem a bit more polished though.

Writing to an MSDOS disk is something I require maybe once every two months
so I never bothered to acquire the write version of CrossDos, I just use
PCCopy instead. For this small amount of usage, I'll probably just continue
using PCCopy since it doesn't require mounting or anything.

    regards,

Do you have to have ARP to get this to work. I don't have ARP
and tried it. I get "Reserved not assigned" when I try to mount
their MSH: device.

Where can I find ARP?

Try WJG::AMIGA:ARPrel13.ZOO, it's probably somewhere in TAPE too.

A 3.5" HD floppy drive from CBM???????

    re: MSH
It doesn't like VIRUSX snooping the floppies. AmigaDOS usually
wins the race to look at floppy, then VIRUSX checks the bootblock
while MSH is trying to read it. MSH gives me a bad msdos disk requestor.
    After that it works fine.

    re .4

Yes, it requires ARP mount. Grrr. I don't use ARP but I broke down
and broke out the Mount command, renamed it to Mnt and put it in my
path. Works okay. AmigaDOS 'dir' and 'list' behave strangely as well
and the ARP version work correctly, but my favorite is still 'ls' and
it works just fine with MSH.

I played around with MSH for awhile last night and it worked as advertised
for me. I have not seen the commercial version of CrossDos, so I
    cannot compare.

3509.8looking for seamless file compatabilitySALEM::LEIMBERGERFri Feb 23 1990 03:4025
    re .6
Yes a 3 1/2" hd floppy from CBM. It is made to go into their
top end clone. I was reading the announcement sheet which simply
said it would read 720k,and 1.4meg floppies. I am going to call
the makers of cross dos to see if they are working on a driver.
Now I use crossdos to read 720k floppies off a friends IBM model
70 .We use ds/dd floppies. I am hoping that
    	1. a driver is coming
    	2. I will be able to read 880k,720k,1.4meg.
This would give a great degree of flexability because a MAC II would
be able to read post script files from the 1.4meg IBM floppy.
    	re .3
The things Crossdos offers is the filtering of CR/LF,diskchange,
several format options, and the ability to read ST floppies. It also
seems like it would be easier to intergrate due to the diskchk, kill, and
other utilities. While I don't use it all the time.I do want it
available all the time.I find that by using only the format command
I want, and the diskchange, and kill command I can have it around but
not have to carry the overhead. Of course MSH_15 may also have this
but Crossdos makes it very easy, and is also good with WorkBench.
I eventually hope to be in a posistion where I can freely move text
files to service bureaus, and have access to EPS files from both
worlds in a seamless manner regardless of disk formats.

Sorry to blow your dream right out of the water, but there is no
such thing as an CBM 3.5" HD disk drive for the Amiga. The one you're
talking about is just for their MS-Dross PC's.
To get such a drive for the Amiga you'll need:
    1. The AT card (A2286) with the drive you mentioned,
    2. A floptical disk drive connected to a SCSI controller with the
    appropriate driver...
    3. An Agnus that can handle HD de/en-coding (there's no such beast).

    re:.10

you left off the option of having an Amiga HD floppy controller card, just
like they have for adding 3.5" disk drives to pc clones. Of course,
it doesn't exist now, but I wonder why it doesn't. Most of the
pc market supports 1.44, so it can't be that tough from a hardware
point of view. Is the problem writing a device driver for it?
