3472.0. "SOUND SAMPLING: How many formats, where are the tools?" by BSS::CALLAGHAN (last hymn is sung, Devil cries MORE) Tue Feb 13 1990 23:40

I've been reading thru the SOUND related topics/replies,
and have been trying to put together whats what.

I've been using Perfect Sound and don't have access
    	to DMCS, Sonix, etc....

There are many of the files in various directories on
TAPE, WJG, etc., that won't play under Perfect Sound,
most of the time error messages like IFF FORMAT, BUT NOT S8VX.

2 Questions I really need help on!!!

    	1. What and How many audio sampling techniques are there?
    	2. Are there any packages that can read these other formats
available (PD or otherwise, P.S. I can't find DCMS at all)

    					THANKS for any HELP,

3472.1Delux Music Construction SetNOTDG::MCGHIEThank Heaven for small Murphys !Wed Feb 14 1990 03:4112
    re: DMCS,

Delux Music Construction set is a product from Electronic Arts as far
as I know. I've never come across a public domain player for it's
sound files. This is a pity as I have seen references early on in this
notesfile that it plays music very well.

As for standards for sound sampling... someone else may be able to help
    you with that.

    Regards
    	Mike

Look in the Amicus directories in TAPE:: can't remember the disk
offhand but one does quite a lot of sound conversion stuff..

1812 needs a particular instrument ... Low strings or something
    as I recall ..
I only got it going on Deluxe Music Construction Set in the
    end.

Don't know about the rest .. There is a list instruments program
somewhere about ... try running that on the files..

Ok, I'm always up for something new, thanks for the repsonse.

		Meanwhile.....

Some of you folks out there must do sound work,
can anyone shed light on the various sound formats,
or point me to some documentation on them, I'd really
like to get a handle on what all these formats are/about.

					thanks,

Buy the tech manuals. Documentation of 8svx is in one of them
in the back, probably the hardware manual.
I wrote a BASIC program to write new instruments, so I studied 8SVX
very hard (8 bit sample sound something). This is a pretty standard
format, I have never seen a program that couldn't read it.
Synthia can make this format and DMCS can play it. This format is used
for samples of sound effects and musical isntrumetns with octaves
    and loops.
I also studied dumps of Synthia output and DMCS instruments (i.e.,
instruments that came with dmcs, dmcs can't make insstrumetn.s
You can also buy a sampler for $100 to sample sounds in that format.
