Make sure it's Amiga compatible... Amy requires slight hardware
additions to the raw drive.
> 1) Boot from it?
No.
> 2) Will it work if I buy some of these two disk games?
Absolutely.
> To enable me to do this do I have to set any switches or do anything,

Turn off the power, plug in the external drive cable, turn the power
back on. Voila! You will have a two drive system.

| Boot external drive?
No: Not yet.
Yes: When Workbench/KickStart 1.4 comes out, it will allow you to boot
workbench from any drive. It is suppose to boot the first disk it
sees as bootable.

3441.3 | Most will recognize second drive, but... | BOMBE::MOORE | BaN CaSe_sEnSiTiVe iDeNtIfIeRs! | Tue Feb 06 1990 22:27 | 4 |
| Some of the two disk games will ignore the second drive and still insist
that you swap disks into the first one. I've run into this on a few of
the recent releases from Psygnosis, including Shadow of the Beast (I
think). I *HATE* brain-dead software like that!

| Ah now you've given me a chance to have another go haven't you,
I bet the S/W isn't brain-dead, it's PROTECTED, and the paranoid
type who wrote it reckoned the ability to see another drive might
leave a possibility open.

| So......
It is as I suspected, whether the 2nd drive is used or not depends on
whether the author wrote a clean program or not. I think this could
really hack me off, as I lie back on my bed, joystick in hand, playing
the game and then...
'Please insert disk 2'
..but it's in DF1:
'Please insert disk 2'
AGGGGHH! I've got start all the swopping again, now why did I buy this
2nd disk drive????

It isn't copy protection, it really is brain dead software. In
some cases because they tossed the OS out and program the hardware
directly, so they don't have AmigaDOS to tell them about extra
hardware. Other cases, it's due to quick ports from other systems
(I really hate to see requests that tell me to insert disk 2 in
drive A).
Fortunately, those are getting to be the rare exceptions.

| Greg - is you want to do any form of programming or CLI work
a second drive is almost imperative (sp?)
Changing workbench and program disks will drive you nuts otherwise...

| Perhaps people could help me by listing 'BRAIN DEAD' software which
doesn't utilise the 2nd disk drive, then I can afford it ;-)

| add Operation Wolf to that list (the original 2-disk version)
As to extra memory - the A501 card with extra memory and battery
backup for the clock is very reasonably priced - cost me around
$150NZ ($100US aprox)
Bought my extra drive on month one
memory on month two
of course - this was before I got married! ;^)
