3419.0. "PD Disks--->SoftPC--->Amiga????" by BAHTAT::HILTON (Two in the box ready to go) Thu Feb 01 1990 11:16

    Hiya,

    I'm trying to get some pd stuff onto my Amiga, using a VAXstation 3100
    with a 3 1/2 inch drive.

    I've seen the notes about it in here, but they suggest using VAXPC,
    which is now dereleased. I've got SOFTPC here on my VAX, and can fire
    that up ok. It doesn't seem to want to format the 3 1/2 drive as 720k,
    but I got around that by using a PC and format a:/n:9.

    Then I can tell SoftPC to use part of my VAX disc as a shared disk.
    Within this shared disc I put the stuff I want to copy. Then I go to
    the a: drive and copy from e: to a:. Sounds good? Well it doesn't seem
    to work!!

    It lists all the files, and then says '0 files copied'!!!

    Anyone got any hints/tips/pointers?

    Cheers,

    Greg

3419.1pcdisk is a lot easierCGOFS::OAKLEYBCNU2Thu Feb 01 1990 11:4914

    Not sure about SoftPC but we have been using an image called PCDISK
    which came with VAXPC and also comes with PCSA V3.0. With this
    executable (and preformatted 720k disks, because it will only format
    1.2mb) you use the command 'use a: dua2:' to assign your drive to A:
    and then use the command 'Import filename.ext' to copy/translate from
    VMS to the DOS disk.

    It is a lot simpler than emulating DOS and using a file service.
    Perhaps SoftPC has this image, if not try copying it from our system
    CGFSV3""::sys$system:pcdisk.exe.

How do you like it? Does it run many applications successfully?

I tried VAXPC awhile back and it was a PIG! Is SoftPC any better?

Where did you get it? (on the net?)

Thanks for any help...

    Try looking in HADLEY::DKA300:[APPS.SOFTPCDECW.VERSION2] for the kit.

3419.5SoftPC V2 is slow..BAHTAT::HILTONTwo in the box ready to goMon Feb 19 1990 04:5012
    John,

    Yeh Version 2 also runs's like a pig!!

    You have a fixed size window, but version 2 supports EGA, extended
    memory and common VMS/MS-DOS disk, but I had a problem trying to copy
    from this shared area to a:, in fact in didn't WORK!!

    Performance is slow, and really hammers my DS3100, maybe I need more
    memory or someat ;-)

3419.6SoftPC now WORKS OKBAHTAT::HILTONTwo in the box ready to goWed Mar 07 1990 06:3016
    Well I think I had a duff copy of SoftPC version 2.

    I can now copy from e: to a:

    E: is a shared area, so I just copy stuff across the net, into the
    right directory, fire up SoftPC, and copy it to a:, then carry the disk
    home, and I'm there!! Quite quick, and no modems involved anywhere.

    SoftPc also has a great utility called DOS2VMS, which converts DOS
    text/data files to VMS format. Hence I can convert any document files
    and print them on the laser printer!

    All in all I'm pretty impressed at how quickly it it possible to get
    stuff across and converted.

3419.7Still trying to get from VAX to RX23 via SoftPCLEDS::SKRALYSam Skraly, DTN 291-7244Wed Jun 13 1990 18:2515
I'm trying to go from VAX to RX23 via SoftPC and I'm stuck with the
problem mentioned in .0, i.e. I can create a network disk e: with the
stuff I want to copy, but when I try to copy to a:, it comes back with
"0 files copied". How did you solve the problem in .6?

Here's my syntax:

A:\>copy e:ffxxx.zoo a:ffxxx.zoo

I didn't use VMSTODOS prior to copying, is that an issue (when I tried it
on a text file, it came back with "Error 0"), or is that only needed for
text file transfers?

Thanks,
Sam

    Sam,

    What version of SoftPC are you using??

    The problem seems to go away with version 2.
