3418.0. "A2620 RAM Chips?" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Thu Feb 01 1990 10:46

I'd like to chip my A2620 board up from 2 megs to 4 megs. Does anyone
have a good source for the 256K x 4 ZIP chips? The A2620 manual calls
out part number 414256-10 ZIP at 100 nS. It looks like I'd need 16
chips to obtain an additional 2 megs. I wouldn't want to pay more than
    $100/MB if possible.

    Thanks for any pointers. Ed.

Jeese Ed, I just soldered 2 meg into my 2620 last night! 5Meg total now!! And
Sculpt 3Dxl soaked up a good 3.5 meg of it in one gulp!

The parts are 414256-100. I ordered them from a place pointed to by a
recent note (look in the last 100 or so for one I entered on RAM). The place is
in New Jersey.

Cost was 230.00.

You need 16 chips.

I ended up with the 80ns parts so I decided to try the 2620 at 80ns timing
(it usually runs at 100ns). It worked (so far...)!

The difference was pretty noticable. A RAMSpeed program I have gave me:

Cycle time	effective ram access speed

	100ns 11.2 MHZ
	 80ns 13.8 MHZ

	13.8/11.2 = 1.23 times faster or about 23% faster!

The 80 ns parts they shipped were marked 514256-80 @ $14.00 a piece.

I don't know how they are for the chips you are looking for but my past
    experience with

    Micro-processors Unlimited

    phone # 918-267-4961

has allways been that they have had what I wanted at the best price I
could find and they have allways shipped same day. In fact if you
called DEC Employeee Purchase looking for memory you would often be
    refered to them.

Now that I have given them a reference watch them start to mess up.

    Good luck.

    Thanks John, Ken...

I just ordered 16 of the 80 nS parts from Corey at Microprocessors
Unlimited for $11.95 each (100 nS parts are $11.75).

They ship UPS 2nd day air; total cost: $198.25.

this seems as good a place as any for this:

I visited Active Electronics in Westboro MA (they are a nationwide chain)
recently. I noiticed a flyer there about "Memory Mania" - a sale on memories.
These include all kinds of varities of ram and rom. Most are in rather large
(100 and up) quantities and for the more mundane varieties the price is only
"OK." A couple of things might make this interesting for some readers of this
conference:

1) it is a local dealer in many instances and many folks I know would prefer
to buy locally.

2) they have 1 meg X 4 DRAMS that allow the A3000 to have 16 meg on the
motherboard. This latter point is what caught me. The 1 meg X 4 chips are
80ns cmos zips and I think they are also static column mode. The price in
quantitys of 10 or more 71.95 each. The A3000 upgrades in groups of 8
chips - 4 meg hunks.

I also noted that Active is now selling AMP (the better variety) zip
sockets. This is for any of us who feel uncomfortable soldering directly
on those sensitive little rams! They were listing for $1.80 each. That DOES
seem steep and they may be available elsewhere for less.
