3383.0. "CHATTERBOX" by MSVAX::BARRETT (Is my PC a PicoVAX?) Tue Jan 23 1990 18:04

    Anyone heard of a program called CHATTER or CHATTERBOX? It's been
    mentioned on USENET. It sounds like a program available on the MAC;
    plays sound sample files when certain system events take place.
    There are several PD programs that do this for various events, but
    this sounds better because it's all in one program. Anyone have
    this program and care to comment or upload it to TAPE::? I believe
    it's PD.

    					Thanks   {kgb}

3383.1Try FF300 or thereabouts... WHAMMY::SPODARYKBinary ThrottleTue Jan 23 1990 18:167
I believe that one of the newest Fish Disks has a program that will play
an IFF sound when a disk is inserted/ejected. It may be able to do more
than that.

Check out the description for FF300 or FF301.

    I believe Chatterbox recently appeared in the AMIGA_BINARIES
    conference.

Having just gotten my Bookreader Fred Fish catalog copied and running,
a quick check reveals that the program I was refering to is called...

SuperEcho, and is found on FF300.

    Re: -.1

    Thanks; unfortunately that's not the program I was refering to.
    That program only plays samples when a disk is inserted or ejected.
    Chatterbox (found on the AMIGA_BINARIES notesboard as mentioned
    earlier) is suppose to play samples based on several different events,
    including disk eject/insert. I'll check it out and post my findings
    here. If it is as I hope, similar to the MAC program, It will eliminate
    the need for multiple background processes.
3383.5UUDECODE Help NeededMSVAX::BARRETTIs my PC a PicoVAX?Tue Jan 23 1990 19:574
    When I tried to UUDECODE the file, I got a "no begin line" error.
    After examination, I find that the begin line had a leading character
    of an "X" -- in fact, all the lines begin with an "X" or "XM".
    Am I suppose to remove the "X" before UUDECODING?

    Got it, thanks. I'd still like to know what I should have done to
    get UUDECODE functioning correctly. I put the two pieces together,
    but was I suppose to remove the leading character(s)?
3383.9extracting the .zoo file from comp.binaries.amiga postingsDECWET::TBAKERTom Baker - DECwest CSSEWed Jan 24 1990 13:3827
Binaries distributed on usenet are put in a zoo file, then uuencoded, sometimes
split into several parts, and then shared.
So, to get the zoo file you have to reverse the steps. You saw X's
at the beginning of each line because the file hadn't been unshared yet.
Here's how to extract the zoo file on a VMS system.

	1.) Edit each file and remove everything up to and including the
	      #----cut here-----cut here... line.

	2.) unshar each file.
		$ shar -u filename

		This will create files filename.zuu01, filename.zuu02, ...

	3.) If there is more than one file, put all the .zuu0x files together
	     into one file, e.g. filename.zuu (I use an editor for this step)

	4.) uudecode filename.zuu - this will give you the zoo file

I do steps 1,2, and 3 on an ultrix system (where I get comp.binaries.amiga),
then copy the .zuu file to vms where I uudecode and download it.

On Ultrix:
 step 2.)  sh filename
 step 3.)  cat filename.zuu0[0-x] > filename.zuu (for a file of x parts)

    Thanks, makes sense. Does anyone have SHAR for VMS? I could use
    a copy.

    I just tried the Zoo'd version of CHATTERBOX - pretty good program,
    but limited to only one kind of sound sample file (and unfortunately
    I have a large number of other types as well). I sent a few suggestions
    to the author.

    Re: Chatterbox

    	Found one problem. It seems Online!Platinum doesn't work correctly
    when Chatterbox is running - especially when trying to exit. It
    got hung up until I stopped the background process. Don't know if
    other communication programs have problems with it.
