| The sources have been uploaded to TAPE::USER2:[upload] and the file
is called HDSOURCE.ZOO.
It contains the source files to make the 'harddisk.device' driver.
See for more additional information the MAKEHD.ZOO file and the
CHEAPHD.ZOO file.

(A happy user of this simple/cheap solution).

3367.2 | What if... | MSVAX::BARRETT | Is my PC a PicoVAX? | Mon Jan 22 1990 14:46 | 31 |
| I have the following configuration:
AMIGA 2000 rev 4.5
PC/XT Bridgeboard
30meg OSICARD (on the IBM side)
I'm currently using the harddisk as a 21 meg Amiga drive with FFS,
and a 9 meg IBM drive. This as a pretty good setup, considering
that I've had a "21 meg" harddisk and only spent $320 on it. Only
drawback was the inability of autobooting from it and my
startup-sequence taking 2 minutes (due to JANUS initialization).
This note and several others have caused me to raise some questions:
1) Does JANUS V2 allow the above configuration to autoboot the AMIGA
from the harddisk?
2) (The documentation is not clear on this) - Can more than 1 drive
be "hung" off the controller of the OSICARD? If so, how do I do
it?
3) (And the big question) - If I use the information in MAKEHD and
CHEAPHD, will I be able to "move" the OSICARD from the IBM side
to the AMIGA side? Will it autoboot? How does it compare in performance
& reliability to "the old way" and to other Amiga SCSI drives?
Thanks in advance! I'm hoping for some
good answers.

1) In order to access the IBM side Hard disk, you have
to use a program (PCDisk). So it is impossible to
boot "directly" from the IBM HD. What you can do
is setup a floppy that initialize PCDisk and wait
for the IBM HD to come up then releases the control
to it.
2) I never saw a "osicard" but most IBM controler I
saw has normaly 2 outputs for ST-506 type disks.
(3 "Berg" type connectors on the controler?)
3) I have no idea for that query.
Enjoy,
Vince.

| Re: -.1
1) Actually, that's not true. PCDISK is only used if transferring
files between the two systems. The "Amiga" partition on the IBM
drive is perfectly usable once mounted - but it does require the
bridgeboard to complete its initilization process beforehand (which
takes 60 - 90 seconds). My current startup sequence simply does
the "BINDDRIVERS" command (which starts the IBM init sequence),
then other stuff that fills the 60 second period, then a MOUNT of
the Amiga partition. It is not necessary to start PCDISK unless
you are going to use the AREAD or AWRITE commands, or virtual devices.
2) My OSICARD documentation doesn't tell me much about the actual
device. There is a sheet entitled "RLL Controller Card Formatting
Instructions with 32MB Drives (ST 238, Miniscribe 3438)". Does that
shed any light?
3) Does anyone know?

1) That's what I mean, you cannot boot directly an IBM based disk
without previously goint to a floppy with the appropriate
drivers and all. It first "boot" df0: and releases the
control to the IBM disk. The proper library has to be in
DF0:expansion/ isn't it? You are probably right about PCDisk,
but I remember, it needs something.
2) Your "osicard" resemble mine. It should support 2 drives since it
has 3 conectors. The drives would be connected this way:
----------------|
| J1 J2 J3 | J1 J2 J1 J2
| | HD # 0 HD #1
| Osicard |
|_______________|
Osicard HD0 HD1
J1 to J1
J2 to J1
J3 to J2 to J2
If it doesn't have 3 connectors (2 small, one larger) forget it.
Those cables are standards and can be bought in any IBM shop.
I personnaly mounted my second disk (3") besides the power supply
using 90 brackets, where a A2620/A2630 would reside.
Good Luck, Vince.

| Thanks for the information. I'll be opening my system up within
the next 10 days to install my Fatter Agnus and SupraRAM 2meg
(yeah!!!), so I'll take a look at it then. I assume that the controller
is for RLL type (does that mean I'm limitied to only RLL?). What
drives would be good to use for my second uint? Like yours, it would
have to be small so I could tuck it away inside. I'm not that familiar
with the IBM world, so all help is appreciated.
