3354.0. "Tk50 or TKZ50?" by SHARE::DOYLE () Wed Jan 17 1990 12:02

I recently aquired a TK50, the problem I'm having is identifying it
  as a TZK50.
The I.D. on the physical Tape unit say's TK50, on the board it's
  connected to, it's marked "Z72669766".
	Is this a TK50 or a TZK50?
If this is a TK50, does this mean use a mfm type controler?
If this is a TZK50, I have two seagate (StXXX) hard drives, 1 40meg
and 1 20meg (mfm types). Is there a controler out that will support 2 mfm
type drives as well as scsi tape drives?
						Thanks

    	TK50 or TZK50 ??

The TK50 drive has a PC board attached to the bottom ( drive
controller ). If it is a TZK50 there is a cable running from the
drive board to a SCSI interface board. The scsi board doesn't
    attach to the TK50 drive.

    	If it is a TK50.

It has a TK50 specific interface. No Amiga or other non-DEC controller
    will work with this drive.

    	If it is a TZK50.

The drive follows the SCSI standard. I have tried to make a TZK50
work with a GVP controller and now a CMI multi port board. The GVP
board worked with custom software ( I wrote my own backup program ).
I was not happy with the combination. Later, I got a CMI multi port
board ( SCSI, 2 serial, 1 printer ). I'm currently writing my own
SCSI driver ( not working yet ). Writing my own driver seems to be
    working out better.

Hi,

anyone written a Tape device driver suitable for a TZK50 or TZ30 ?.

In particular I'd be interested in knowing what would be invovled with making
such a tape drive working with an A590 (2091 style I believe)

There's a PD program in "test" now that creates a TAPE: device which
you can COPY to and use TAR with:

	1> copy *.* tape:
	1> tar -cvf tape: src/
	1> tar -tf tape:

Check out wjg::amiga:tape.zoo,tape_tar.zoo

This stuff seems to work with the GVP tape system.

Hi John,

thanks for that. I intend to pick up a A590 today ($$$). And started to think
about backing up data etc. A TZ30 or TKZ50 would seem to be an ideal way to go.

Now I have to think about cabling, power etc... hmmm
