| Look in the back of _Computer Shopper_. Also, a board salvage place
in Arizona has been advertising in _Amazing Computing_. They desolder
old boards, remove and test the parts, and guarantee what they sell.
I bought some 120 ns 256K x 4 DRAMs in ZIP package for only $3.25
each, and got delivery in 5 days via UPS. I suspect that 100 ns
parts in DIP packages would be closer to the $15 you estimate.
Another source is always the computer flea markets held every couple
of months in Woburn or Marlboro (if you live in or near Mass.).

John, if you find a good source for the ZIPs, let us know.

John, did you end up ordering some 256x4 chips? I would like to order some
myself. If you ordered some, where did you end up getting them from, and for
how much?
Thanks,
Frank

Yes. I got 2MEG worth at (I think $14.00 each). Ed found them cheaper. Look
around for a recent (last month or 3) note on RAM...

Nice people, good prices, great service.
These guys accidently shipped me the wrong kind of chip. When I
calleed them and made them aware of their error, they Fed Ex'd the
correct order to me free of charge.
I had the correct parts in my hand about 10 hours later.

Strange! Same thing happened to me from the other guys. Except they
made me ship the package back to them, and once they got it, shipped
me the right stuff :-( Took well over a week!

| Well, the SEDT v4 port is going slowly. Everything is done except for the code
to deal with how Anker now does the keyboard mapping. The AMIGA just doesn't
fit well into the model he is now using. There just doesn't seem to be a clean
way of making it work for the AMIGA. So, I guess I'm gonna have to get in touch
with Anker and see if he has any suggestions.

I was thinking that when a vendor treats DEC folks well, we might
inform them that they were thought well of at DEC. In this way, they
might go the extra mile to provide top notch service for future DEC
customers.
If you have problems with a vendor, you should NEVER threaten them with
a bad review in NOTES. However, I think a little positive feedback
never hurts and would still be within the guidelines of 'doing the
right thing' and all that...

You;ll need (16) 414256-10 ZIP chips at about $12 each. With shipping,
the total bill came to about $200.
Make certain that you make it perfectly clear that you require ZIP
chips, since they seem to send out DIP chips by default. Be sure to
tell them that all the pins exit from the same side of the chip.
Apparently the ZIP package is not very common, whereas the standard
256K x 4 DIP package IS common.

No to rain on anyone's parade, but everyone does realize that upgrading
the memory on one of Commodore '020 or '030 boards involves soldering.
Not that I'm implying that anyone whose replied so far was unaware
of this, or incapable of carrying through, but I personally wouldn't
be able to do the upgrade. I imagine any good dealer's service
department would be willing to do the work for a price.
The reason why I'm replying if that I could see someone (like me)
who didn't realize the upgrade involved molten metal and a densely
packed PC board might buy the chips before realizing that doing the
upgrade is no piece of cake.

I know what a DIP is (Dual Inline Package - pins on both sides) and
a SIP (Single Inline Package - pins on just one side) but what is a
ZIP (Zero Inline Package - no pins?).
I think what I have on my '020 board are SIPs. Is there something
newer that I'm not aware of?

I don't know what the acronym ZIP stands for, the the ZIP chips have
two rows of pins that are staggered by .050 - presumably to prevent
them from being inserted the wrong way.
To underscore what Randy says, this IS NOT a job for amateaurs. Even
if you manage NOT to destroy a $1k + board by lifting a solder pad or
some such, you could have a single cold solder joint and spend the rest
of your life trying to find it.
Although I have no formal qualifications as an electrical tech, I have,
over the years, done a fair amount of fine soldering work, including
repair jobs on hard disk head wires, which are finer than hair. PLEASE
don't try this unless you are either
a) qualified
b) wealthy
c) insane
I managed to slip into (c) above, so I came out of it OK.

| Another vote for microprocessors unlimited. I order 16 of the little ZIP
buggers from them Yesterday (Thursday), and they arrived this morning
(Friday). They ship Federal Express (by default).
The total price was $200 for chips, and 7 for shipping. So, the total
upgrade price was $207. Not too bad for another 2MB!
