Dave,
Take a look at 3297.11. I've been fiddling around with the
emacs_pro file & have had only moderate success with it. We can continue
the emacs discussion there if you like since I've got some updates
to make to that note since I last entered it.

I am very satisfied with my Epson LQ-850 24-pin printer. I think you can
find them in the $450-$550 range. It has a lot of nice standard features
and quite a few optional features, like the multi-font module and the
cut-sheet feeder.
It comes with a push tractor and tear-off feature, so you don't waste
paper. You can also load single sheets without having to unload the
tractor-fed paper.
You can set the buffer to 0K or 6K (use 0K for Amiga use since the Amiga
is multitasking).
Good quality throughout. Uses nylon or film ribbons. Works nice with
Pagestream and Professional Page.

| I have a Panasonic KP-1124 24-pin printer and like it quite a lot. All
the usual goodies plus 4 different ways to feed paper: from beneath,
from the rear, pinch rollar or tractor feed and front single sheet
feed. Feeds envelopes from the front very well. Another plus is that
the ribbons have an ink bulb in them that after a period of time you
can activate to extend the ribbon life.
I've seen the price around the $399 range recently. Whatever printer
you get, I strongly suggest a 24-pin type as the Letter Quality print
rivals a typewriter and is much faster than a 9-pin in the NLQ mode.

Both Pagestream and Professional Page can output to dot-matrix printers
using outline fonts. The output is a duplicate of the PostScript laser
output. The LQ-850 can print at 360x360 dpi.

3346.6 | 300 X 300 what driver | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Wed Jan 17 1990 03:47 | 11 |
| Paul,
I own a Citizen 140gs printer that will also output 300 by 300.
However I am using the EpsonQ driver, and in the printer reference
section of the 1.3 manual it states the driver will only do 180
300 at higest resolution. This was also stated in the printer readme
file that comes with PPage 1.3 .What driver are you useing ?
the citizen uses a 4 color typwriter type ribbon, and standard
paper. I do not think the color output will compare to a Paintjet
but then neither does the price. I bought the citizen not because
of price but I can not use water solable output.

| Could someone maybe elaborate on this "outline font" business? Does
this actually mean that a decent 24-pin printer will produce comparable
results to a PS laser? Secondly, if you can control the pins in
this way, should it not be (at least theoretically) possible to
control a non-PS laser by the same method to produce PS-like output???

3346.8 | PS much nicer | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Fri Jan 19 1990 06:26 | 16 |
| If you print a document out of Professional page using the Outlined
fonts included with ver 1.3 you will get a very smooth looking text,
at the higest resolution of your printer, just as you get a no jaggies
graphic when printing a structured graphic picture. However even
if your printer exceeds that of a postscript printer(300 x 300)
you will not get the same quality output. When it comes to text you
will get a very very good looking output that will appear to look
as good as postsript, but if you print a graphic you will not get
the same quality. This is because a dot matrix printer does not
have the ability to handle gray scale as nicely. As a matter of fact
I dumped a gray scale image(picture of elvira) out to two laser
printers.One was a postscript printer,the other did a bitmapped
dump using the dot matrix output from PPage, and there was no
comparision. The PS printer did a much finer job.In this instance
the PS printer was also much faster.

| Yes I can see the bit about the grey scales, but if you were just
printing line graphics (but with lots of curves and things) would
it look like PS (ie jag-free?) If all this is true, then what is
the need for PS (except, of course, for the grey scales, which wouldn't
be that important to me)?
Presumably all this would work as well with the HP ink-jet as well
as a dot-matrix???
