3312.0. "Grounding PAL chips in A1000 - advise/techniques" by Z::TENNY (Dave Tenny - ICE Project Leader, 291-8013) Tue Jan 09 1990 12:45

So... Supra says that the reason I'm having trouble with
my hard drive is that my PAL chips probably aren't grounded.
I would guess they're probably right about that, I've got
an extremely old Amiga 1000.

They sent me the directions for wiring the chips to some point
on the board, basically (if I recall correctly) it was wrapping
wire around one leg of chip.

Before I take the thing to Memory location and get charged
some unknown bucket of money (and I don't live that close
to them), I wondered if it would be difficult for a someone
who is from Night of the Living Hardware Dummies to do this
little upgrade. The most I've evern messed with anything is
swapping a few uvax II boards.

Can someone advise on this? If it isn't difficult, could someone
with experience describe how to remove amiga covers and shielding
for an A1000 in a step by step fashion, how best to pop PAL chips
from board, and any other tidbits?

If the consensus is that it isn't worth it, I'll take it
to Memory Location. Has anybody done this? How much did it cost?

Thanks to everyone who replied by mail.
There's a lot more interest in this topic than I expected!.

Anyway, I've got the information (and help) I need.
I'll post the outcome (and whether the drive works after
grounding the chips) when it's over.
