3307.0. "Bars & Pipes Demo" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Tue Jan 09 1990 01:04

    A friend handed me a demo version of Blue Ribbon Bakery's BARS &
    PIPES, an "...object-oriented musical composition environment."

    I left the archive alone for a few days, until I ran across a message
    thread on PLINK extolling the virtues of this package. The reviews
    were literally gushing with praise, with comments like '... nothing
    like this is available on ANY computer', '... revolutionary' and so on.

    Since I don't know anything about all this music stuff, someone else
    will have to be the judge. The demo version DOES look like an
    extremely good bit of Amiga programming, with lightening-fast window
    response and gadgets and menus galore. The developers are active on
    PLINK to provide support.

    The demo version alleges to be able to use the Amiga's internal voices
    (I don't know how to do this yet, as I haven't read the READ_ME), so
    you don't have to run out and by a MIDI device to try it.

3307.1Article in Amazing ComputingRICO::ALVAREZSo much work to do...so little timeTue Jan 09 1990 07:497
    	There is also an article on the latest Amazing Computing, written
    by one of the authors. I'm not "music literate", so I can't comment
    on the capabilities, but for someone who gets interested in the demo
    and is looking for additional information, he/she can find it there.
    It's a four/five ? page article.

3307.2Thanks again EDSTAR::ROBINSONTue Jan 09 1990 11:335
 Once again ED comes through. I had just read a message on usenet about the
 DEMO and already read the Amazing Computing article. This sounds like a good
 one. I was going to ask the Plinkers for an upload, but ED, (even with a new
 baby, ;-) ) anticipates when I am ready to cry for my Amiga Demos...

     Oh sure here we go again :^) :^)

     Ed makes the Music-x demo available - I try it and end up buying the
    real thing. Now he gets Bars and Pipes. I suppose I'll have to fire
    up the modem and dust off the checkbook. How am I ever gonna save
    for a synth !

     Thanks Ed!

3307.4Demo File is REALLY at TAPE""::USER2:[UPLOAD]BARS_PIPES.LZHSTAR::ROBINSONTue Jan 09 1990 12:060
3307.5SMAUG::SPODARYKBinary ThrottleTue Jan 09 1990 16:5816
    Just an idea. I noticed several archives in the
    TAPE::user2:[upload] area, that sounded interesting. However,
    they didn't have any associated documentation with them,
    and I don't remember hearing about them in this conference.

    In the future, how about including a README type file, to
    anything that you upload. [ in addition to posting a note
    as Ed has done here ]

    I am leary about uploading anything unless it's been recommended
    by someone here. It's not just the threat of a virus, but
    the time involved also.

    Thanks,

Copper demos. Not bad. More of the same (DOC like)

3307.7README.TXT's needed for uploads, especially for LHARC filesAKOV11::SMITHReality, just a visible imagination?Wed Jan 10 1990 08:509
re: .5

I agree. When using LHARC (or WARP) you can't look at the Doc's or ReadMe in
archive before downloading (since we don't have a VMS LHARC). With ZOO's or
ARC's I always extract the Docs and look at them, deciding if it looks worth
downloading. I really like LHARC since it reduces the download time but it
would be nice to see what the archive is about first.

3307.8Some file moving required for Demo.STAR::ROBINSONThu Jan 11 1990 17:457
     A note about this demo archive. On my version all the files are
     at top directory, and two directories (tools and accessories , I
     think) have .info files only. To get this thing to work correctly,
     create new directories that match the directory .info file names,
     and move the appropriate files to each directory. The files to move
     have extensions that relate to the directory names.

Or use

	1> lharc -x x bar_pipe.lzh

The "-x" means deal with extended filenames (i.e. directories)
the "x" means extract.

This is equivilent to ZOO e// zoofile.ZOO

3307.10lharc l <> zoo lSTAR::ROBINSONMon Jan 15 1990 15:3518
     RE. .9:

     Very interesting. I "assumed" that the subdirectories
     were missing because

      1> lharc l bars_pipes.lzh

     didn't list them the way zoo does. So,

      1> lharc -x l bars_pipes.lzh

     which includes the "deal with extended filenames" switch,
     is reaquired for the full listing, too.

     Thanks for setting me straight, John.
     I'll try to be more unassuming... %-)

3307.11Nice demo!HPSCAD::DMCARRAsleep at the mouseTue Jan 16 1990 11:5910
    Even if you're not into music or midi devices, give this demo a try.
    I know diddly about midi but had some fun this weekend playing around
    with the features of Bars & Pipes. It's an impressive piece of software
    engineering. Although I haven't the foggiest idea of what I'm doing
    with all the gadgets, (there is a doc file & 2 .iff files which semi-
    explain what the menus & gadgets do), I was able to get the demo song to
    play & alter the sounds on some of the tracks. And as Ed mentioned in
    the base note, you don't need a midi device to hear what's going on. Just
    use the AmigoPhone.

3307.12Major computer stopperYUPPIE::WILSONTony, the HOSS TRUMPETMon Jan 22 1990 22:208
    I downloaded this demo and broke it out to floppy (lharc -x x ...). It
    does precisely the same thing every time. It puts up a screen, turns
    the general tenor (pun intended) of my screen red and hangs the
    computer. Am I doing something stupid or have others had this problem?

    The diskette was renamed to "Bars&Pipes Demo".

    Tony (a musician; I'm not called HOSS Trumpet for nothing).
3307.13MINE TOO!POLAR::GOSLINGTue Jan 23 1990 11:038
       I have exactly the same problem loading to a hard drive. I have
       killed (or rather not started) all of the usual background jobs,
       with the same results. I get a SOFTWARE FAILURE requestor, and a
       hung system.
