3285.0. "The complete Fred Fish catalogue " by NZOV01::MCKENZIE (Stop Pollution: Leave a legacy) Thu Jan 04 1990 02:29

    If anyone is interested...

I have a complete catalogue of all Fred fish disks (1-300)
the catalogue is in VAX Document format and is fully indexed.

I have included all original test as extracted from various notes
in this conference, but have removed all the header stuff and
    generally smartened it all up.

BE WARNED: Its a HUMUNGOUS file - about 400 pages big - but binds
easily into two large - auto-stick binders or one large ring binder.

If anyone is interested in a copy, send EM and I'll supply the file
    pathname for ftsv copying...

    Happy new Year

among us who will join the great implementers...;^)

Since this is a document that should be available to everyone and
since I'm on a little island at the bottom of the world , with only
a single network route, what does the moderator feel about placing
a copy of the current file on node BOMBE - in a public directory
    there somewhere...?

It's about 1000 blocks big so its not too bad and that way EVERYONE
could get hold of it, either from NZOV01 or thru BOMBE, should NZOV01
    become 'Unreachable' for whatever reason...?

    Comments?

I'm on BOMBE (some of the time, anyway) and I'm already pulling the
LN03 version to that node. I'll do likewise with the PostScript
version when it's available and cordinate with the moderator on its
(at least temporary) placement in a public directory.

N.B. As noted elsewhere in this conference, BOMBE is a bit off the
beaten path network-wise (though not as far afield as NZOV01). Any
    volunteers from well-connected nodes?

I just spent my spare time today doing the same thing, extracting note
1156 reply by reply (couldn't do an extract 1156.*. I would keep losing
the network link) and editing out the headers and assembling the
individual files. When I was finally done (about 10 minutes before
quiting time) I saw this note. A-r-r-r-g-g-g!!!

Thanks for the effort and time you spent on this project. It will sure

For those of you printing these catalogs on PostScript printers (LN03r,
LPS40, LPS20, etc.), may I suggest that you save some trees by printing
more than one page per sheet? I have found 4 pages/sheet works well.
Just include "/PARAMETER=NUMBER=4" on your print command.

I have no objection to placing files here on BOMBE, but I'm afraid it
wouldn't be very useful because local (organization) management have
imposed a general ban against network file access into this system.

    re: .27, .32

LN03 version will stay - I have altered file protection to fix the
    problem mentioned in .32

as for the comments in the Postscript version - ignore them completely
    - they are part of the file which I use to create the 'watermark'
effect on pages in the postscript version...

It is just fine to print - but PLEASE use

    PRINT/queue=[postscript queue]/PARAM=NUMBER=4 FF_CAT.PS

this saves lots of trees - and since there will be a lot of updates
added to this file at one time or another - might as well make sure
it's printed on the least paper possible...

I am considering splitting the manual into 2 manuals also

Manual 1 (Both LN03 and PS for the time being) disks 1-300
Manual 2 (Both LN03 and PS for the time being) disks 300----->

this will save a bit of needless reprinting I hope (now that manual
    #1 is pretty much ok)

For those of you willing to shell out a whopping $10, System Eyes
(101a/Greystone Plaza) is now selling the Fred fish catalogue in the
form of a database program. Pop in the features your looking for in

3285.41DECwindows Bookreader and onlne help versionsSTAR::ROBINSONTue Jan 23 1990 16:4328
I just copied a DECwindows bookreader version, and a VMS online HELP version
of the now out-of-date ( %-| ) 1-300 version of the FF catalogue to TAPE.

The bookreader version is:

TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]FF_CAT.DECW$BOOK

I also copied FF_CAT.DECW$BOOKSHELF, which you can append to
an existing LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file on your system.

And, I included a simple LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF with the file already appended
to it. If you copy FF_CAT.DECW$BOOK and LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF to your own
directory, you can point the Bookreader at it with the logical DECW$BOOK.

The VMS online HELP version is:
TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]FF_CAT.HLB

To use the HELP file, copy it to the directory
defined as SYS$HELP on your VMS system (sorry not tested this way), or copy
it to any directory and use the full help directory spec as follows:

$  HELP /LIBRARY=device-name:[directory-name]FF_CAT.HLB

Perhaps Phil will soon copy these to his directory:
   NZOV01::$1$DUS21:[AMIGA]

Enjoy,
Dave

The new Bookreader version is at:

I also copied FF_CAT_V2.DECW$BOOKSHELF , which you can append to
an existing LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file on your system.

And I included a simple LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF which includes both volume
names (as named on TAPE, but not NZOV01) already appended to it. If you copy

3285.47a little $define helpWHAMMY::SPODARYK"You'll thank me later"Mon Jun 11 1990 19:1811
A typical $define will only place the logical into your local process table.
You will have to run|spawn|submit sys$system:DECW$BookReader from the same
process in order to reflect the decw$book logical.

You can $define/sys decw$book [wherever], and then the Session Manager
will pick up the proper info, but that takes extra privleges. I usually
use a search path, so that I can access the "normal" BookReader documents.

$define/sys decw$book [wherever],sys$common:[decw$book] ! normal location

This comes to you by courtesy of KERMIT from NEWBURY ENGLAND.

Before you guys in the US go home for the weekend, I need some help.

I have copied the files for the DecWindows version of the FF catalogue
from TAPE:: using FTSV from Tape to my account at work. At home I have a
Vaxstation 410 running DecWindows. Objective to be able to browse through
the FF catalogue at my leisure.

 	so here goes!!
	1. ARC the files into one Archive
	2. CVTARC the archive to fixed length records.
	3. Tell kermit to set file type Binary
	4 Set kermit to server.
	5. Break back to the VaxStation at home.

	6. Tell local Kermit to set file type binary
	7. Set line TTA2: ( which is wheere the modem is)
8 Tell kermit to get the CVTARC'd file

Kermits; do the transfer slooooowly (1200 baud)
Yipee!!!!! its done. Kermit says OK

	9. CVTARC the recieved file back to STREAM_LF
	10. ARC says I like it, lists and unpacks the files.
	11. Install the files in SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]
	12. Modify LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF
	13. run bookreader. Bookreader sees the new books.
14 Attempt to read either volume bookreader complains they are not
in the CORRECT FORMAT. and they cannot be accessed

What have I done wrong? - Used Kermit? There are copious notes
telling me XMODEM will not work via TSN. I must confess, I tried but could not even
establish communication.

Does anybody have any Ideas? I really want to read this stuff.

    Two things you might try:

    	1. Use VMS BACKUP instead of ARC. I know it doesn't do
compression, but it will maintain the file attributes.

    	2. Look through this notesfile there is a little known
kermit command which will avoid having to use cvtarc.
I believe it is SET FILE FORMAT BLOCK or SET FILE TYPE BLOCK,
but I'm not sure as I haven't used Kermy in a long time.
