Has anyone ever explored the possibility of having your Amiga system automatically "power itself" up and down at some set time (probably at night)? One application would be to get (or send) your private EMAIL, UUCP postings, or ARC files unattended. I realize one might say "why not just leave the system powered on?", but I'm not a big fan (no pun intended) of that as the 2000 generates quite a lot of noise. There's also the issues of trusting the current of the building, static build up, cost of electricity, etc. Has anyone come up with a safe way to do this?

Why not get one of those mechanical timer doo-hickeys that plug into the wall outlet and enable or disable the current at various times of the day? They cost around $10, and people use them to pseudo-randomly turn the lights on and off in different rooms when they're away. You could then grab a copy of Nazcon off the net and run it as a background process in your startup-sequence. Nazcron reads the Amiga's clock every second or so, and at a preordained time will execute any batch file you desire. You could use any terminal program that supports scripts (or ARexx) to completely automate a session. If you're too lazy to create a script or an Arexx macro, there are several 'journaling' type programs that record all keystrokes and mouse events for playback at a later time. Ed. | |||||

RE: .-1 (Thanks) 1) I have such a timer, but have a fear that the computer might be too sensitive for such a device and may eventually get damaged. Too bad there isn't a "standby" power mode in the Amiga that could be programmed to "turn on" (sort of like a computer version of a screen saver). 2) Where can Nazcon be found? Is it better than AMICRON? |
