3209.0. "GVP's SCSI controller with 2Mb RAM" by EEMELI::LINDEN () Tue Dec 12 1989 10:55

If anyone is familiar with GVP's A2000 SCSI controller with 2MBytes, I
would like to what kind of RAM chips does it use??? Is it 256Kb or
    512Kb???

And the second question I got is that if the controller uses 512Kb
chips and I put 1Mb chips instead could I then use 4Mb or does it only
    recognize 2Mbytes???

The GVP controller with 1MB uses 256K chips. I beleive that the
    2MB board uses 1MB parts.

3209.2How does the GVP 2mb/disk controller perform??UBEAUT::MANDERSONMonday oneday, Tuesday the nextTue Dec 12 1989 17:0922
I am probably going get this controller card (with a ~45Mb Quantum and
2mb RAM) to go into my 2000 (which is due for delivery in the next few
days or so.... finally.... almost here).

Question:- What do they perform like??

I have had some VAXmail discussion's with a friend about different
disk/controller options and also several phonecalls with to local
distributors, currently mainly about this controller. I know the
distributor will probably be talking it up with 'better' performance to
make me really want to get one (I would rather a true DMA controller
but $$ at this stage). I am therefore interested in the performance
relative to a microbiotics or similar DMA board. If their performance
really sucks in comparision then the decision gets harder.

Anyone know how the A2091 will perform and roughly what they will cost
relative to other similar controllers? I was talking to Commodore
yesterday they are due to start customer shipping here in Australia in
    Jan/Feb '90.

    re: .0
If you are talking about the one pictured in current GVP magazine ads,
they use a pair of (Apple-style) 1meg SIMMs. These SIMMs are readily
available from various sources. Current prices I've seen advertised
run in the $110-$140 range (each).

The Mac notes file has a memory-related note with the current lowest
prices. As of about two weeks ago...

MET had 70ns SIMMs for $85/Meg
Microtech had 80ns SIMMs for $78/Meg (Ask for Bob French 1-800-626-4276)
Chip Merchant had them for $79/Meg

Steve - Not buying a Mac, but a friend wants to add some memory to his,
so I was doing some checking for him. :^)

    re .0:

I've got a GVP-controller working in my system.
It uses 1MBit chips and can only be configured with 2MB RAM.

GVP told me that they are going to upgrade the autoboot-eproms in
order to speed up the tranferrate of the controller, but the latest
news I've heard are that they are going to upgrade the board.
That means you will be able to get a new controller if you want.
The upgrade will be released in march '90.
