| Sounds to me like you are trying to use *stolen* software. Since you
apparently feel it is a worthwhile utility, perhaps you should PAY the
authors for their work. In return you'll have the instructions you
require to use it properly...

| Your intitled to your opinion, but if your not going to be of any
assistance please keep your piracy opinion to yourself! I stole
nothing! If you want to discuss piracy etc go to that notes file.
If you have something of value to add regarding my questions then
add them or stay out... Thanks for nothing.

3178.3 | Not just my opinion, it's my JOB | BOMBE::MOORE | BaN CaSe_sEnSiTiVe iDeNtIfIeRs! | Tue Dec 05 1989 00:04 | 12 |
| Mike,
As moderator of this conference, it is my responsibility to ensure that
activities conducted herein do not place DIGITAL at risk. That would
include exchanges of information to further the use of pirated software,
or any other illegal operations. Allowing such activities here would
be sufficient grounds to have this entire conference *terminated*.
Your statements so far give me the impression that you are asking for
information which would have been included with a legitimate copy of
the program. I'm willing to be convinced that my conclusion is
incorrect. Otherwise, I must insist that you not use this medium to
elicit support for your 'gift'...

| I suggest that your friend return the package to the dealer, and
request a complete package. In the interm you could call the software
company,and request help.I had returned a disk,and resistration card
together to a software vendor, and a year later found out I was still
not registered. The tech support people had recieved, and lost the
bad disk, and my card.I ended up sending photo copies of the MANUAL
and the serial sticker that came with the product. So you can see
the manual is important even if the program can run itself. In re
.3 I support the moderator. It is not a question of is the software
pirated,or not,but one of is it even questionable. If there is the
SLIGHTEST indication that it could be I expect the moderator to
act as he did.One has to consider that if a person will steal
directly.or indirectly from others, then they may not hesitate to
abuse the notes files for there own gain.If it COULD be proven
that someone was requesting help for pirated software then they,AND
ANYONE replying to the note offering assistance should have acsess
to the conference cut. There is no gray area here you eather support
stealing software or you don't.I consider this conference an important
privledge granted to me,and resent those that would compromise it.
Not only is the conference being put in danger, but it's integrity
has been comprised.how many people feel that if they ask a very
simple question they could be accused of piriacy ? If even one person
feels this way then we have been compromised.a year ago this thought
would never had arisen. It is time for the conference to take a stand
on this.

| I have to agree with both .3 and .4.
Discussions on the philosophy of piracy lead nowhere. It's a religeous issue.
I do know that this conference has been an invaluable source of both fun and
knowledge for me and many others (and heck, Ed just posted the NekTek Demo 3!).
Anything which compromises this conference and also DEC itself must be avoided.
I vote Mr Moderator should DELETE all notes requesting help on (verifiably)
pireted software and that all readers simply not reply to any such notes
other than to ask "Where's your manual" or "Have you called the distributors"
etc. etc.

3178.6 | Can we stop now... | LINCON::MGAINES | | Tue Dec 05 1989 08:51 | 16 |
| I did not intend for replies such as "I vote moderator etc". If the
questions I asked seem to indicate something not in support of the
conference I respect that. So its not necessry to take a stand on this
issue. Maybe I should have phrased my questions differently. I for one
enjoy the Amiga notes file and would never do anything which might put
it at risk.
I have seen many notes files regarding questions of non-sharewhere
software, usually they get helpful replies. Maybe I should have
asked "X-copy anybody have it thats willing to explain it"?
Now if we can stop the debate, I for one would appreciate it. Over
all I agree with your concerns.

| I think we should go with .5,and then let this discussion, not the
issue be put to rest.
