3175.0. "No SW version labels?" by SSDEVO::YESSE (Computing at 6200 ft.) Fri Dec 01 1989 15:32

I am purchasing commercial software for the first time in over
a year, and am wondering if my luck is poor, or what..

I finally got Falcon, but specified V1.1. No Amiga versions have
package labels specifying 1.0 or 1.1; after tearing open a package
at one retailer, and another calling the producer (Spectrum
Holobyte), we finally determined that packages with S/Ns higher
	than 26000 were V1.1.

How come no version labels on the outside of the box?

I'm also ordering Lattice C V5.04. It came in today (at a local
retailer's who explicitly ordered V5.04), so I went to
pick it up...the box says "5.0". Hmmmmmm. We open the box, and
examine all documentation. The only thing we see specific to version
number is the user guide, which says "5.00". Hmmmm. Open the disk
	package, insert into the store's A2000... and it's 5.02!

How come no *updated* version labels on the outside of the box?

Is this common in the Amiga community? I can see a distributor
making an ordering mistake, but I can't blame him if the product
isn't clearly identified in the first place. Hopefully DEC has its
act together regarding software orders, otherwise I can see why
customers can get a bit disillusioned...

P.S. Have to admit, Falcon is one incredible toy!!!

In regards to lattice, don't worry. As soon as you register the product
you should get an update.I don't expect a company that issues frequent
updates to put the ver extensions on the package.I bought 5.0 and
now am up to 5.04 in less than a year.I also recieved the update
offer for falcon in the mail.If you had the old one you would get
the update with the mission disk for 25.00 .In general I can say
almost all my software has been updated since I registered. One would
have to think that the cost of printing, etc prohibits changing revs
on packages between major releases. If lattice came out with a 6.0
I would expect it to be on the box.
