3171.0. "System hangs, what's happening?" by LEDS::BUSCH (Dave Busch at NKS1-2) Thu Nov 30 1989 13:35
Last night I happened to bump my desk with a chair, whereupon my monitor screen
went blank. I noticed that, although the monitor still had power, the red LED on
the A500 had gone out. After a couple of minutes, during which I didn't touch
anything, the system came on and rebooted. However, after that, I had problems
with DigiView. First I tried to load in hi-res B&W mode but got an "ongoing
task" guru. That problem, whatever it was has gone away but I have noticed the
following, repeatable problem.
1. Boot WB 1.3 (with the analog clock displayed)
2. Select (double click) the DigiView disk icon
3. Load DV
4. Quit DV...notice that the analog clock is frozen
5. Reload DV...the disk starts turning but no seeking and no loading. The system
is hung.
If, after 4 above, I pop out either the WB or the DV disk, the clock starts
running again and I am able to reload and run. Also, if the clock is removed
before trying to load DV, everything works out OK.

3171.1 | power problems? | WELMTS::EDWARDS | | Fri Dec 01 1989 06:28 | 20 |

Dave,
Your problem sounds very similar to a one that I am currently
investigating. The problem started with random crashes, hangs etc.
finally complete failure to boot with the power led flashing rapidly.
Initial impressions were that there was a power problem associated
with the plug on the back of the A500. Monitoring the +5v inside
the A500 showed a fluctuating voltage (sometimes zero) although the power
supply itself remains stable. Movement of the cable/plug affected
the varied the voltage. I have tried tightening the power sockets
on the computer and I think I have fixed it but if not I'll have
to look at the socket again (see note 2994).
Hope this is of some help to you.
Paul.

| Yes I agree (belatedly, I've been in bed with 'flu for two weeks),
the PSU plug is CRAP, you can get no end of trouble from it.

3171.4 | A bug in WB 1.3? | LEDS::BUSCH | Dave Busch at NKS1-2 | Thu Dec 07 1989 13:01 | 6 |
| I talked to Don at The Memory Location and described the problem. He told me
that this was almost certainly the result of a bug in my (early) version of
WB 1.3 and said that it should vanish if I upgrade to a later 1.3. I have a
new copy but haven't had the chance to check it out yet. Maybe this weekend.
