3098.1 | Sounds interesting... | SMAUG::SPODARYK | Binary Throttle | Mon Nov 13 1989 22:49 | 19 |
| It's done with mirrors. :^)
Actually, there's been some discussion of this in AMIGA_TECH
(amiga.tech) and the idea is to swap the color registers for
each and every scanline. The screen is still a 4 bitplane screen,
but due to the Amiga's very capable graphics chip, up to 4096
colors are usable.
I haven't seen it, but like SHAM it's supposed to take _most_
of your Amiga's CPU power to pull it off. I don't believe
this format is IFF compatible, but I only know what I've read.
In theory, it sounds easy enough... for each scanline swap the
color registers with the next set. Then when you think about it
for a minute, how many computers allow you scanline control over
the displays? The custom chips give us the 'sliding' screens in
various resolutions/color schemes, and a whole lot more.
Will it steal all a '020s cycles? I can't wait to see it!

3098.2 | maybe i can sell my perfect vision | GUCCI::HERB | | Tue Nov 14 1989 22:07 | 7 |
| From what a friend told me.. he says it takes up so much of the
system you can do nothing with the display mode besides display
a picture. So I guess no paint program for it.. And I still have
perfect vision.

| Digipaint III has support for what they call 4096+ mode.
Don't know if that is the 4096 Hires mode, but I think I saw a claim
that Digipaint III already supports that new mode.

3098.4 | I want to see a dynamic HAM pic. !! | GUCCI::HERB | | Thu Nov 16 1989 20:46 | 8 |
| no...thats not "dynamic HAM". I think 4096+ is 24-bit color..or
something like that.
I am so unhappy that I got perfect vision. Any software updates
for it? Could I possibly use the digi-view software with it?

| If the 4096+ is like DigiView's (which probably is since they are both from
the same company), then it's (I think) just standard HAM using some dithering
techniques to get 2 million(?) apparent colors.

| Yeah, 4096+ is just an enhanced version of HAM mode. It gives
you a slightly clearer picture. It seems to eliminate some of
the fringing associated with HAM mode but is still either 320x200
or 320X400.

3098.7 | I just want to see a dynamic HAM pic.! | GUCCI::HERB | | Mon Nov 20 1989 19:43 | 4 |
| I must get my hands on a hi-res HAM pic. I gotta see one soon!

3098.8 | A similar example... | BOMBE::MOORE | BaN CaSe_sEnSiTiVe iDeNtIfIeRs! | Tue Nov 21 1989 00:17 | 11 |
| The current issue of Compute's Amiga Resource disk contains a picture
viewer program ("V") and a sample 'sliced-HAM' picture. I happened to
have a copy of the normal HAM version of the same (tropical fish)
picture, so i could compare the difference. Their sHAM version is much
cleaner! I believe this is similar to 'dynamic HAM', but I don't know
for certain.
By the way, V appears to be a pretty decent viewer. It's reasonably
compact, works from either the CLI or Workbench, and includes a fairly
nice file requester. Sorry, I don't think I can upload it, it's
copyrighted by Compute!

| So now we have 2 groups doing display interrupt pics. Any news
if either bunch has approached CBM about getting a blessed IFF
format to do that?
I assume NewTek is going to do something like SHAM to enhance
HAM pics (seems like too good a trick to ignore).
Hopefully we'll get a blessed spec before too many folks start
implementing their own formats.
