3017.0. "PostScript support for LJ250/LA75/LN03Plus/LA210" by DRIVEN::SANFORD () Fri Oct 13 1989 01:48

    Seeing how everyone is converting IFF to PostScript, the next step
    would be color output? Right? How about a very low cost A-size
    color PostScript printer? Well "Digital has it now...", Digital
    just recently released (for internal field test, company confidential)
    a new product which outputs PostScript files to low cost devices
    such as the color LJ250 (color PostScript) and LA75 printers.

    PostScript is no longer just for groups with a LPS40 or LN03. I
    have been generating color PostScript using a VMS RAGS editor
    and LJ250 with excellent results, even color PostScript
    overheads. Included is a memo on how to get a field test of
    this product, use of this product should be work related.
    To receive this product, send mail as described below.

    Enjoy, -drew

Subj:	Announcing internal field test of PSprint

This message is to announce the internal field test of a new product,
DECprint PostScript to Sixel Printing Utility for VMS, v1.0, known
informally as PSprint.

PSprint prints PostScript files to sixel printers. Supported printers are
the LA75, LA210, LN03Plus, and LJ250. Color PostScript is supported on
all printers, although you'll only get colorful output on the LJ250.
Printers can be connected to the system via a standard VMS print queue, or
via the printer port on a VT-series terminal.

Because this is the first release of PSprint, we have had some difficulty
finding external field test sites. We are relying heavily on internal
sites to test the product and to give us valuable feedback. For this
reason, we are running the internal field test somewhat more formally than
is customary. Being an internal field test site means that you agree to:

	* install and use the software,
	* accurately report any problems or mis-features that you
	   encounter,
	* read the documentation and tell us what you think of it,
	* keep at least a rough record of the amount of use the product got.
	*  not distribute PSprint PAKs,
	* complete a questionnaire at the end of the whole ordeal.

If you want to become an internal field test site, send mail to Ned
Batchelder (Hannah::BatchelderN) with the following information:

	*  Who you are
	*  Where you are
	*  What you do
	* What version(s) of VMS you will run PSprint on
	* What type(s) of VAXes you will run PSprint on
	* What type(s) of printer you will use
	* Whether you will use printers via queues or terminal printer ports
	* What type(s) of PostScript files you will use (text, graphics,
		images; color or b/w; what applications generated them, etc)

Feel free to forward this announcement to others who may be interested.

    Is the LJ250 standard or modified for the application.I bring this
    up because It has always been my understanding that postscript is
    standard across the industry.This would tend to indicate that given
    the proper software you could print color postscript files from
    Pro page on an LJ252 or LJ250,right off an amiga.

    Sounds like translation software to me. You feed it PostScript which
    it interprets, builds the image (bitmap) and dumps it to the printer in
    sixel form. Kind of the reverse of translators used to print LN03 and
    ReGIS files onto LN03Rs, LPS40s, etc. I assume it needs to run on a VAX.

    As far as I know that's exactly right. It runs on a VAX (maybe they'll
    release a DECsystem version as well ?)

    Think of it as host-postscript.

Professional Page and Professional Draw produce color
PostScript files. I tried it and sent it to a DEC color
postscript printer (sorry, I don't know the number) and it
worked quite well.

Along these lines, I'm told there is a package that allows
an LN03R (ScriptPrinter) to print "regular" ASCII files.

Does anyone know the name/status of this product?

    Assuming you mean the VMS software, it's called CPS. KITSDIR.DOC (from
    COMCAD::SYS$PUBLIC:) lists:
    	CPS V2.1      HANNAH::KITS$:[CPS.V021]
    	CPS X2.2      STIKNY::KITS:CPS022.%

    PSPRINT is a host based PostScript interpreter. You simply define the
    device characteristics, horizontal density, vertical density, color/
    number of bit planes, and size.

    The LJ250 is a standard LJ250, PSPRINT converts PostScript to sixel
    format and sends the file to the printer whether attached or a print
    queue.

    Only PostScript files are sent to an LPS40, when you send an ANSI or
    REGIS formated file to an LPS40 it is converted to PostScript on the
    system sending the print request via a translator. I think the LN03R
    is supported in the same way. Only PostScript files are passed
    directly to an LPS40 or LN03R.

    PrintScript for the amiga translates postscript files to be printed
    on any of the printers supported in DEVS:printers.It only can handle
    a few fonts,and I doubt it does color,but it is a step in the right
    direction.Of course the quality of print will probably vary greatly
    across the range of printers supported.I was looking at it but 150.00
    for the program seemed high in lue of its limitations.

    re: a couple replies back.

    The CPS software is the scriptprinter symbiont and associated startup
    files etc.

    It's digital's standard and recommended way of people driving their
    LN03Rs (I'm not sure about the LPSnn units).

    In fact I think Digital indicates that you shouldn't use a
    scriptprinter without the CPS software (marketing or technical reasons
    I'm not sure)

    I thought PrintScript for the Amiga was $89, not $150, direct from
    Pixelations...

Thanks guys. The big guy in the corner office upstairs is taking a
system home with LN03R and want's to be able to print regular files as well.
Looks like CPS is what he needs.

    Whoa! I stand corrected... PrintScript _IS_ $149. I'd swear the price
    used to be $89 or thereabouts.

    Humble apologies...

    PrintScript is no more.Due to legal problems they renamed it to
    PixilPrint,or Pixilscript.I can't recall at the moment.I was looking
    at it in System Eyes the other day,and ed is right the price has
    also changed to 149.99 .I was made to understand that it is a major
    rewrite,with features,and speed enhanced.I will probably have to
    purchase it in the near future,but am waiting until I get a printer.
    (smart move huh)I am looking into a LJ252 from work.
