2984.0. "Thinking about Amigas" by KETJE::VLASIU (try with a bigger hammer) Wed Oct 04 1989 10:49

		Hello,

I love the Amiga since the begining but I have to tell that I also dislike
some aspects about it and its history. So, let's talk a little about the good
and the bad even if it's subjective. Now note that the bad is not necessarely
so bad nor the good so good.

+ It's a state of the art personal computer.
- Yes, but it was too advanced for its time.

+ It has an advanced architecture (custom chips ..).
- Difficult to program in depth and direct overall speed limitation.

+ It has multitasking.
- But no effective memory and intertask protection (so ask Guru..).

+ It's far from PCs and Mac's (technical point of view).
- It's far from PCs and Mac's (commercial point of view).

+ There is less but good quality software and strong PD software.
- Weak in business applications (unjustified weakness).

+ It's a machine you love.
- It's a machine you hate.

+ It should be the number one personal computer.
- Yes, but only with strong support and maybe the 2500 or 3000 models.

+ The 2500 or 3000 could be THE UNIX-MS/DOS dual system computer.
- Wait and see.

+ It has good graphics.
- PCs with VGA also, Mac II also.

- It has taken time to have a relatively good position.
+ Do you remember how old is Mac?

- Piracy affects the software development.
+ Not more than for PCs and Mac's. It's still the professional use who brings
  the most money for software.

+ It's more like a mini than a micro (the OS).
- The general (application) user makes no much difference.

Well, these are few things who came to my mind as I try to understand how such
a machine has not succeeded to really chalenge until now its top competitors.
But there is still time if some future Amigas will run UNIX, the Amiga native
system and MS/DOS in a same box. A box containing 68030/6888x and 32 bit memory,
to run Unix, a graphics enhanced 1 or 2 meg. Amiga for display, sound and I/O
control, and PC (or PS) boards options, could give a serious blow,..if it apears
quickly.
Now I stop dreaming as in the evening I'll go back to my 500. It doesn't matter
I like it anyway !

Really, a very fine thing this conference.
