2958.0. "Looking for SCSI Tape driver for A2090(a)" by WJG::GUINEAU (Impossible Concentration) Mon Sep 25 1989 23:43

I have the opertunity to obtain a 60MB Streaming Tape drive (WangTek)
with SCSI interface (via Adaptec card).

I'd like to use this as a backup device for my 2500, but need one minor
detail: A driver.

Soooo, Does anyone have or know of a SCSI Tape Driver which works with
the A2090(a)?

I already replied to John via EMail, but for the benefit of the
other "poor" souls out there in dire need to back up their GigaBytes
of hard disk storage... ;-) ;-)

    1. No tape driver for any CBM controller right now, pretty hard
for the current 2090(a) software, easier for 2091.

    2. The Adaptec will also be a problem for the current 2090(a) software,
since it can't "inititialze" the card for the hardware it has attached
(don't remember the exact SCSI command right now).

Hopefully someone (maybe even CBM? ,-) will come up with a solution
to all of this within an acceptable time frame.

2958.2not 2090 but yes with GVPELWOOD::PETERSTue Sep 26 1989 11:1320

As stated in .1 the current driver for the 2090(a) will not support
scsi tapes. I have heard that AmigaDos 1.4 may come with a new
driver that would support the "direct SCSI" interface. This would allow
you to connect a tape or anything else.

GVP is shipping version 2.2 software for their SCSI controller.
This software supports the "direct SCSI" interface. At the "World
of Comodore" show they had a WangTek tape drive connected and software
to backup/restore data. They expect to be shipping tapes Oct 1. They
will also sell the controller and Tape software without the drive.

I'm writing my own software to work with the GVP controller. If
you have a GVP controller, without boot ROMS, and standard 68000 you
can run my software today ( I have a few bugs with other
    configurations ).

Attack, <CB>?? Why, that was a frontal assault! 8-) (inside joke) :-)

GigaBytes? Ya right, all 0.145 of them (thats 145MB to you and I). And DEC owns
105 of 'em :-(

Maybe I should pick this baby up in anticipation. It's a *good* deal...

Does only the GVP card support Tape drives what about

Xetec Fastcard, MicroBotics HardFrame or Supra Systems...?

What about CS (Cache System LTD L.P.) Tape system using Tandberg Data
1/4" cartridge tape..I'm still waiting for info I requesed from Amiga
    World's August issue...!!

Any SCSI controller can support a tape drive or other device.
The problem is driver support. I have been working with GVP because
they have supported some kind of "direct SCSI" interface for a long
    time.

C-LTD did have a tape backup program but I never could find out
    more details.

Xetec Fastcard also has tape backup software but I never could
get information for them ( what drives supported ... ect. ).

MicroBotics Hardframe, and Supra don't support tapes.

CS has been shipping a tape, but I don't know any details.

I have been working with GVP and it works. The backup program
creates UNIX TAR compatible backup tapes.

Spoke to Jason of Third Coast in England re the Xetec backup drive and
was told that it only support one drive Teac.

The drive (tape) that are used have an eeprom change and the software
    looks for this EEPROM...

2958.7Future Tape BackupTLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersThu Sep 28 1989 19:3715
I called Microbiotics a few weeks back and asked them if they planned
any support for backup devices. I was told, "Yes, we are working on
support for SCSI tape backup, but I can't reveal when such a support
will be available."

Commodore must be planning some support for tape backup. The A2500UX
(the Unix package Amiga 2500) is supposed to come with tape backup.
The only A2500UX I ever saw (Dale Luck's when he have a talk the the
Boston Computer Society) did indeed have a tape backup unit in the
5.25 inch floppy bay.

I hope that the tape was functional, and that both AmigaDOS and Unix
could talk to it.

I don't know if Luck's machine contained a 2090(a) or a early 2091.
