2940.0. "Name of Chip for Board needed" by BAHTAT::BOOTH (Mr Simpson, hmmm. French is it?) Thu Sep 21 1989 05:20

    Hi,

Datel electronics here in the U.K. sell unpopulated memory expansion
boards with/without the clock. What I need to know is the part
number of the chips I would need to put into such a board. Is there
    a specific make also?

    Thanks,
    Rob.

    Rob,
ST/AMIGA FORMAT reviewed memory expansion in APRIL 1989
" There are 2 main types of memory chips used by ST and AMIGA machines
    1Mbit DRAMs and 256 Kbit DRAMs. 1Mbit x 1 bit DRAMs have 18 pins;
8 bits to a byte means you need 8 chips for 1Mbyte of memory. similarly
you wold need 32 256 Kbit DRAMs to achieve the same result. .......

SUPPLIER PHONE RAM TYPE	PRICE (Pounds)
    Amiga Centre 031-557-4242	1Mbit 24.15
    Commodore 0628-770088
    Electromail 0536-204555	256Kbit 5.29
    Electromail 0536-204555	1Mbit 25.92
    Maplin 0702-554161	256Kbit 7.85

Amongst the cheapest options for A500 512K RAM Expansions is
ASHCOM at 99.95 (Pounds) includes clock. I have one fitted
to my A500. ASHCOM advertise in most magazines and will
accept credit card puchases over the phone. I contacted
the at 4:00 pm on one day and I had my memory expansion fitted
and working at 7:00pm the next day. It's a great feeling when
you see all that memory waiting to be used.

2940.2Cheaper, I'm sure.AYOV28::ATHOMSONC'mon, git aff! /The Kelty ClippieThu Sep 21 1989 07:397
I'd check out the latest (November) issues of Amiga Computing and
Amiga User International as I'm sure I saw some Ads for 1mBit DRAMS
for around #15, dropping to #13 based on quantity. There is another
new A501 replacement which uses only 4 x 1mBit chips and is only
    something like #89 populated.

    Re .2
I agree with Alan. Recently the price of DRAMs has dropped
consequently the price of the upgrade has dropped. However I am
undertain whether the #89 (pound) upgrade contains a clock.
The ASHCOM one certainly does not. 99.95 also includes VAT, postage,
    and packing.

To buy populated or unpopulated boards is gong to be a pretty
close run thing. The choice is yours? but look a what DATEL charge
for the same board populated it might just tip the balance in favour
    of another supplier.

    				Regards,
    					David

The Amicon user group here in Columbus is doing a club memory purchase.
They are selling chips as well as the Microbotics 8-up and star-boards.
The 1Mbit x 1 chips are 80 nanosec. and the club price is $98.00 per
    MEG. 256K x 4 are the same price and 256K x 1 120 nanosec. are $126.00
per MEG. I currently have 3Meg in my 2000, but at this price I think I
will buy another 2 Meg for my A2058 board. I don't remember the price
    of the 8-up or star-board.

I am assuming that if I were to buy an A2620 or A2630 that I could move
the chips from the A2058 to the accelerator board. Could someone that
understands the hardware confirm this or set me straight please.

Well, I think most expansion boards take the DIP or SIP style packages.

The A2620 takes the ZIP style packages, which for some strange reason,
are about 2x the cost of DIP 1Mb chips.

I saw an add in New Computer Express This morning for #77 (Without
clock), or #87 with clock. This is for the standard expansion for
    the A500.

It looks as if the prices are getting lower.

The chips required are 41256 or 4256 for the Datel's board.
