I have a corrupt copy of Shadowgate. Inserting the disk in any drive produces a requestor ************************* Unable to validate disk Shadowgate. Key 1020 is already set. Retry Cancel ************************* Cancel produces a requestor telling you to use DiskDoctor. I know I can get a replacement from the manufacturer but half the fun is to try and fix it!!! I have tried....[Gulp]...Diskdoctor "I should have known better". Not surprisingly No joy. I have tried DiskSalv V1.4 which reconstructed the disk but gives a GURU message Software Error when the new disk is booted. The program is copyright protected, I think, but I dont know how! Q1 can anybody enlighten me on the meaning of the requestor "key 1020 is already set? Q2 Is it salvageable, or is it a lost cause? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Manufacturers could do much to prevent this situation by using copyright protection via a uniqely identifiable machine ID, bonded to the disk on initial installation. This would enable backup copies to be made for that machine but disable it running on any other machine. Regards,

2938.1 | block 1020 appears in two files | TLE::RMEYERS | Randy Meyers | Wed Sep 20 1989 21:12 | 10 |
Re: .0 > Q1 can anybody enlighten me on the meaning of the requestor "key > 1020 is already set? It means that when the disk validator scanned the disk to rebuild the allocated block bitmap, it noticed that block 1020 was allocated to two different files. Search this conference for "validator" for more details.

I have seen this problem with "Pinball wizard" also...

Randy, Thanks for the explanation. I will search "validator" in the conference. A quick question before I do. Is there a way of finding out which are the offending files? Thanks again David
2938.4 | Nope, you don't know which files are screwed | TLE::RMEYERS | Randy Meyers | Fri Sep 22 1989 18:59 | 12 |
Re: .3 >Is there a way of finding out which are the offending files? Unfortunately not. The disk validator has already lost the information about the file file if found the block in. The validator probably knows the name of the second file containing the block, but refuses to tell you. I seem to believe that DiskSalv may tell you which files contain already allocated blocks as it recovers them. But, my memory could be bad here... |
