2890.0. "Copying via sliding icons" by CURRNT::SOBOT (Steve Sobot, Basingstoke) Mon Sep 04 1989 05:44

The copying of functions by sliding icons around sure is useful,
but I think I'm missing something in my understanding in this area.

Why can I copy a clock to another disk (via RAM) but I can't do
the same with the calculator... or shell... or Utilities Drawer?(etc.)
The icons get across ok, but the functions demand the reloading
    of Workbench 1.3 into DF0:
If a drawer is "slid over" doesn't ALL necessary info get copied,
    not just the icons?
If that's not the case, then why did it work ok for the clock?

Step by step, here's what I did...

    1.	Load Workbench 1.3
    2. Invoke Utilities
    3.	Invoke RAM
    4.	Slide clock to RAM window
    5.	Remove Workbench 1.3 disk
    6.	Insert MYDISK1
    7.	Invoke MYDISK1
    8.	Slide clock from RAM to MYDISK1 window
    9.	Invoke clock from MYDISK1 window... it works !

Above got calculator icon to MYDISK1 ok, but when doing step 9 for
calculator (tring to invoke function) requester asked for Workbench
    1.3 !!

    Help! Cheers, Steve

I'm sure other people will have comments on this topic, and it has
been discussed for sure already in early notes, but in a nutshell
    this is your "problem":
The clock is an independent task, it needs no other (disk base)
software. The calculator needs a math library from the LIBS: directory,
which is usually assigned to the libs directory on the Workbench
disk. If you had used the calculator before and no low memory situation
would have occured in the mean time, the math library would have
still been in RAM the request for the Workbench disk would not have
    happened.
There are numerous other dependencies like this...

Pretty busy for the next few days,

2890.2Buy a second disk !NMGV02::CHAPMANMon Sep 04 1989 12:3018
    Fancy finding you here Steve....

This will happen all the time with a one drive system and will drive
you nuts till you buy another drive. The system will look for all
sorts of things that the program needs on the sys: disk (the disc
that you boot from). It might be maths libraries, might be fonts,
might be commands from the c: directory. The only solution is to
put all this stuff on each disc with application programs (see earlier
notes as to what the minimum recommended workbenchh disc is). Then
either reboot every time or assign the logical directories to df0:
after each disk swap. You can also set up a rad: ram disk with, for
example, a c: directory and assign c: to that. But you need expansion
    memory for that.

When in Nijmegen, you can come over for an 'Amiga session'

    Thanks for the input.

Following much "in-and-out"ing of the disks, I think I'll have to
get another (floppy) drive. I did manage to get the calculator(working)
over to my own floppy after "invoking" it from the workbench disk
    as <CB> suggested.

See you in Nij, Colin !

ps. Photon paint IS a good laugh!
2890.4Doesn't work for meENOVAX::BARRETTHave your people call my peopleThu Apr 05 1990 14:417
Hummm.... Everytime I try to copy a disk to disk (floppy to floppy, or
floppy to harddisk) I get an error -- something like "disks must be of
compatible type". As far as I know, 2 floppy drives are compatible.
Any one know what's going on?

2890.5Floopy |= Floppy is wrong default toolsOLDJON::GERBERFor more info, call: 800/555-1212Fri Apr 06 1990 00:458
DiskCopy requires that the disk be of the same type. (Floppy |=harddrive)
If it says floopy's are incompatable with each other, then the default
tool in the icons may not be set properly. I have seen this
occasionally, the way to get around it is to delete disk.info from the
destination disk and remove/reinsert the floppy so AmigaDOS will reset
    the icon information.
