2857.0. "Dots proportion: screen to paper?" by GIAMEM::I_SHAW (Six days) Wed Aug 23 1989 14:38

	I have a graphics question.

When you use a word processor such as ProWrite or excellence!, how
many dots per inch are on the screen? I mean, the screen resolution is 400
(horz), and the 7.5 inch page reaches about all the way across it, but how
many dots really make up an inch (according to the program) when you print
it out?

Similarly, what does point size for fonts really mean, and how does
this influence the actual size they are supposed to be on screen and on paper?

thanks,

I believe the convention is to regard the screen as 75 dpi, so each
pixel is replicated 4 times horizontally and 4 times vertically to
print on a 300 dpi printer. The size information that accompanies
a font is not really a point size but the height in pixels. It isn't
very different from the point size, since a point = 1/72.27 inch.

That means that a 180 dpi printer has to fudge it a bit, right? Make
some dots 2 and some dots 3 times the width?

    re .2

The printer driver and preference together determine if it fudges
and how much. One preference option is fractional or integer scaling.
