2852.0. "Parallel port 2 way interface - possible?" by NZOV01::MCKENZIE (All the while,The Dragon Slept) Tue Aug 22 1989 21:03

    HI again...

I have recently purchased a digitizing scanner from my local store
and learned that it uses the parallel port on the amiga.

Since my Epsom printer also uses the Parallel port (and the
serial port is being used by a modem) I was wondering if anyone
    knows of:

A/ A black box with a single para input and two outputs which can
be used alternately by means of a switch (who supplies it
       what it costs etc) or....

B/ Has anyone made up such a box as a hardware project - if
so could I get a copy of any circuit diagrams/pinouts etc

Is this possible - or am I hoping for a bit much? I dont like the
idea of pulling cables in and out of ports because it has been my
experience with other Pc's that the ports become quickly damaged
(pins bent etc) Plus its a general pain in the A**

Two, three and four-way switch boxes are readily available from many
vendors. These beasties are especially popular among "business" users,
so check places that sell IBM PC accessories, etc. It sounds like
you'll want the 25 pin (all pins switched) variety. These may be
identified as "serial", but as long as it passes all 25 lines it should
work for you. I have a two-way crossover switch box connecting two
printers between two different computers, works great...

I have a couple of companies that you can order ABCD serial or parallel
switch boxes from at very reasonable prices. I use an ABCD box on both
ports to switch between my modem, MIDI, and terminal on the serial line
and two printers and Perfect Sound on the parallel line.

I'll post the most recent prices and phone numbers of the companies later
tonight when I get home. If by some chance I forget (nah, never!) mail
me tomorrow to remind me. :-)

Thanks - that would be much appreciated...
2852.4I've got oneSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterWed Aug 23 1989 20:4210
Since I happen to be noting from home, I have a "Data Transfer Switch"
on my parallel port. It is a 4-way switch: 1 in and 4 outs. I'm only
using A and B currently, to choose a printer. Someday I expect to use
    C for a frame grabber.

I bought the box from System Eyes, currently in Nashua, NH. However,
it is, as stated earlier, a standard item and so widely available.
I don't recall what I paid for it, but I'm sure it must have been
    less than $100.

Well, I did forget, but I have the info now. These are two place that I
have ordered from in the past and the most recent prices I have:

National Computer Accessories 1-916-4414-1568 AB (2-way) $12
                                                    ABCD (4-way) $19 - no joke!
Compu-Add 1-800-627-1967 AB (2-way) $13
                                                    ABCD (4-way) $33

Hope that helps!

2852.6Even $13 ones workSTAR::ROBINSONThu Aug 24 1989 15:453
     I have the $13 2-way from Compu-Add. I picked it up at
a Commodore show last year. It works fine.

The prices in .5 look better than anything I have seen.

I have an ABC which I got from

	BCD
	Jim Black
	PO Box 1224
	Bartlesville, OK
	918/336-1784

It cost $45. Jim will make them in any combination of genders and
connectors you desire. This may be desirable depending on the
collection of cables you happen to have. Note that the only difference
between a serial and parallel switch box is the type of connectors.

THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO REPLIED TO THIS NOTE - after doing a little
snooping around I happenned to discuss the issue over a beer or
2 recently with an old pal of mine who is something of an electronics
buff. He is making this interface for me - I pick it up this weekend

    Thanks again though
