I'd be nasty and phone this dealer into CBM.

2840.2 | Should I upgrade ? | JGO::CHAPMAN | | Mon Aug 21 1989 09:39 | 13 |

Yeah, maybe I would if I had a nice warm feeling towards Commodore.
Re .0
Can anyone tell me definately what I can/can't expect compared to
a B2000 regarding 1.4, ECS and the video slot.
Thanks

Hey, what about this 'Rejuvenator' daughterboard for the A1000 that
will allow the installation of the ECS? I wonder if it would adapt
into an A2000...

Oh well, seems it's time for my two sub-units of local currency. ;-)
Colin, you should upgrade. That is, if you think about using the
ECS, a flicker fixer or professional genlock or the A2620/2630 without
having to remove the 68000. The "Rejuvenator" will (given that it
makes it into production) not deliver full B2000 compatibility,
while being as expansive as the upgrade.
One thing you should really do is to screw that dealer with those
1.4 ROMs. If those are really 1.4 alpha 14 or alpha 15 ROMs, I could
arrange having him sued 'till he starts bleeding.
And don't let gripes with CBM stop you from doing so. Things like
this will ruin the Amigas credibility (the alpha versions are just
that, early, experimental and bugridden). If you care about the
future of the Amiga, get that sucker.

It seems harsh, but life is full of little 'rip-offs' that burn
everyone once in a while.
I bought a 1984 Porsche 944 that came with a 143 HP 2.5 litre motor.
The 1985 models came out a few weeks later with 163 HP. My upgrade
cost would have been about $10,000. Blah.
I read lots of flames from A1000 owners on PLINK complaining about the
lack of an upgrade board from Commodore to support ECS and the Video
and co-processor slots. The A2000 situation is even more painful,
since buyers THOUGHT that they were getting 'the fully expandable'
machine. But if Commodore spent precious resources trying to keep old
hardware current, there'd be no budget for development of
68020/68030/68040 class machines and the whole Amiga line would
whither.
Commodore is no more uncaring (and has arguably been better than
average) than Apple or IBM in it's upgrade policies.
You can't upgrade a Mac PLUS into a Mac SE, and you can't upgrade a Mac
II into a IIcx. You can't even convert an AT class machine into a
MicroChannel model. Obsolescense is the rule, not the exception.
Try to find a buyer who doesn't need full B2000 compatibility.

2840.6 | Tried upgrading a VS2000 to a VS II/GPX, recently? | SUBURB::MCDONALDA | Old Elysian with a big D.I.C. | Mon Aug 21 1989 11:47 | 12 |
| I agree with .4, you have to get the dealer.
But to your problem. If you sell your A2000 (rev=old) now, you might
get a good price for it. Buying a new A2000 (rev=new) gets you more
memory, and the new Agnus chip, and KS 1.3, with a 'no' hassles'
upgrade when 1.4 and ECS comes out.
All in all, you might find that the cost of buying a new A2000 is
exactly the same, or cheaper, than trying to upgrade your A2000
(rev=old).
