2829.1 | Works as advertised. | AYOV28::ATHOMSON | C'mon, git aff! /The Kelty Clippie | Wed Aug 16 1989 10:16 | 13 |
| CrossDos works as advertised. It will be very useful for anyone
with a 5 1/4 drive who uses sneaker net to down/upload. All disk
operations can be performed as though it [the msdos disk] was a
genuine AmigaDos disk, type, copy, rename..... Unpacking archives
becomes as simple as:
1> zoo x// DI0:foo.zoo (DI0: being the mounted msdos disk)
No more mucking about with PCcopy etc.
Point to watch though, the (ARP) mount command supplied is not
compatible with the arp.library which is supplied in the zoo file.
The 1.3 mount command works just as well though.

2829.2 | Looks really nice | FRAMBO::BALZER | Christian Balzer DTN:785-1029 | Wed Aug 16 1989 10:28 | 10 |
| What I like best is the fact that it performs at least as fast as
DOS2DOS (bought it when I received UseNet on MS-DOS disks) or faster,
while putting much less strain on my system. D2D does some Forbid()
which gives you at least a very jerky mouse. Another plus for e
is the double-step mode, since I've connected two 80 track 5.25"
drives to my Ami that look like 3.5" drives to the DOS. No more
switching those suckers into 40 track/5.25" mode and rebooting.

Yeah, CrossDOS is pretty slick. I played around with it a little bit
last night. I have a few Dos 2.11 disks (3.5") from the Data General
laptop PC.
By mounting DI1: I was able to use the my second 3.5" Amiga floppy as
an Amy drive or a Dos drive, depending on which volume was inserted.
It even put a DI1: icon on the screen with the MS-Dos label. Nice.
I had no trouble editing text files from the MS-Dos disketts. Guess
I'll send away for the write-enabled version.

2829.4 | READS VAXMATE 5 1/4" FLOPPIES | POLAR::GOSLING | | Wed Aug 16 1989 12:35 | 17 |

I was really interested in seeing if it had the same problems that
DOS-2-DOS had in being able to copy files from a VAXmate
'produced' 5 1/4" diskette. It copied them with no problem at
all!
I can now use DOS-2-DOS to write and CrossDOS to read.
I am still working with Central Coast Software on the DOS-2-DOS
problem, having recently received an upgrade which was to have
solved it. Not only DIDN'T it fix the problem, but it introduced
some new ones - the main one being visits from the GURU!!

2829.5 | TDpatch13 and KS 1.3 | DPD03::ANDERSONA | | Mon Aug 28 1989 21:17 | 16 |
| Has anyone gotten the TDPatch13 to work on their system. When I try I
get a "Not able to apply patch" message. I only have one floppy so I
suffer from the Trackdisk.device bug. I removed my KS1.3 rom and
reinstalled my old KS 1.2 rom and TDpatch12 runs ok. This fixed
PCcopy720 and PCformat720. I was able to format a MSDOS 720K floppy
and 360K floppy and read it with Cross to Dos.
Does anyone have more info on this bug? Is it cured with a second
floppy, if the second floppy is a 5 1/4 inch 720K? Hopefuly I will be
able to read Rainbow floppys if mounted single sided 80 track 10
sectors. And at the same time be able to Autoboot from RAD:

I don't know if this is the same bug or not, but Noclick3.4 claims
to correct the trackdisk.device bug in addition to stopping the
disk drives from clicking. 3.4 just came over the usenet in the
past week or so. If no one else has it I will upload it as I
deleted my copy on the VAX.

You append a ']' character to the file name to do the conversion.
When reading the file, the ']' causes all carrage returns and EOFs (Ctrl-Z)
to be removed from the file. When writing to a MSDOS file, the ']' causes
carrage returns to be addrd before all linefeeds, and adds an EOF to the
end of the file.
Another note: The demo version od CrossDos has a bug in the TDPatch13
program, that causes it to not work. I called the author, and he gave
me the following patch.... Use NewZap to edit TDPatch13. Search for
two bytes with "0e00". There is only one occurance of these two bytes.
Change the "0e00" to "0380" and save the program. That's all there is
to it.

| Thanks Steve
I went ahead and bought the write enabled version. Also the Setpatch
from WB 1.3.2 also has the Track.disk patch. But my final solution was
to put the floppy interface from note 2878 together. That with a 5.25
80 track drive and Cross Dos is a good combination.
Chalk up another one for the versatility of the Amiga and its
Programers. It would have cost about $275.00 to add an IBM compatable
3.5 inch drive to the Rainbow to enable it to read standard MSDOS
floppies. And for about $150.00 and a little elbow grease I was able
to get the Amiga to a point where it could read 5.25 and 3.5 inch MSDOS
floppies. And at the same time I got a cheap backup device. Now if I
can only make the Rainbow read a 180K floppy with a cluster size of
two.
There is one problem that the author is working on. The Mformat
program will format 80 tracks no matter what the MountList says. In
Double track step mode this ends up with the head being driven into the
inner stop for the last forty. Also the FMT switch ignores double
track step mode and formats all 80 tracks and gets an initialization
error. This should only affect 3.5 inch drives (or a 5.25 inch drive
pretending to be a 3.5 inch). I am guessing but this should work fine
on a standard Amiga 5.25 inch floppy.
Also I noticed today that the sub directories are not created
correctly. Our VaxMate in the office gets upset over the missing '.' and
'..' files.

2829.10 | Where can I get CrossDOS ? | VNABRW::GAISHAUSER_H | | Tue Oct 31 1989 07:52 | 16 |

Hi !
Where can I get the full version of CrossDOS and how much does
it cost ?
Do I have any problems with 3.5" disks ?
I'm working in Austria at AUI and my Amy has no connection to
our system.
Best regards
Helmut
P.S.: I don't like the PCs at all, but sometimes I have to exchange
some files.
