2788.0. "Magazines (again)" by WJG::GUINEAU () Tue Aug 01 1989 09:07

OK, time for another listing os Amiga Magazines. I've been poking around
book stores and have seen all kinds of amiga mags.

Open Book, B Daltons, Waldorfs, Book Corner, Software Etc. Etc Etc

Of all, Software Etc. has by far the largest selection. The guy at the store
said "The Amiga is just starting toget popular on the east coast. Lots of the
new mags in the store have been on the west coast for some time and are just
starting to migrate over..."

This true?

Anyway, there were a couple new ones last night (disk magazines). Here's
a list (from memory) of what I've seen (Amiga only). Any ratings?

Transactor for Amiga (best IMHO)
Amazing Computing
Amiga World
COMPUTE!'s Amiga Resource
Amiga Plus
Amiga Sentry
INFO (Has 64 and 128 too)
Amiga Software and Information (?) New in Softeware etc. 3 Disks!
Another 1 disk mag? that comes in a folder in Software Etc

I know I've missed a bunch...

Their are at least half a dozen Amiga magazine titles at Software Etc.
I'll check tonight to see what the different titles are (I work there
occassionally). If you have any questions about the magazines or
even the software, there is a knowledgeable Amiga fanatic that works
there on Wednesday and Thursday nights (Tim).

BTW: Does anyone have a listing of stores which carry Amigas in the
Mass/N.H. area? I've only seen Amigas at the Memory Location.

I like Computes Amiga Resource. I bought two copies with disks and am
impressed with the quality so far. If they can keep it up, I'll probably
subscribe. They have had articles by Bob Peck and Jim Butterfield which
certainly gives credibility.

I also like INFO, which does have C=64 & 128 stuff. At first I was annoyed
at paying for 8-bit stuff, but the authors are clearly committed to the Amiga.
In fact they are doing the Amiga a service by converting all those millions
of C=64 owners to the Amiga. INFO is opinionated and oriented towards home
use. There are lots of game reviews, and the productivity software reviews
assume you are a home user/programmer without an expense account. They also
produce the mag entirely on the Amiga.

In the last issue one of the editorials suggested that there are too many
mags for the number of users and that there will be a fall out. They had
a humorous/scathing list of which mags should live and why...

I like Amigo Times for a disk based mag.The articles are good, and
the stuff on disk always contains something usefull. At 8.95 with
disk a real buy.I Also picked up Computes Amiga Resource and liked
it.I had no use for the disk based mag put out by Antic. For text
based mags I like Amazing computing.System Eyes in nashua NH has
    a good selection of mags.

ps. I remember when you could not find a mag now I can't afford
them all.I see more disk based mags for thr amiga than any other
    computer.
2788.4I agree!WJG::GUINEAUWed Aug 02 1989 09:0517
No kidding, there are so many disk based magazines for Amiga now. And looking
at their contents, lot's of the stuff hasen't even shown up on our network!

If I can figure out how to get ZOO to save a whole disk with directories
intact, I'll upload the 3 or 4 disks I have from Amiga Plus and Amiga Resource
and Amigo Times.

zoo a\\ amigo16.zoo df0: doesn't seem to work (a option doesn't like //)

I guess I need to specify an input file list to ZOO, but now how do I get
a nice clean listing of all files on a floppy with directory pathnames attached?

list LFORMAT doesn't cut it! DIR's not even close... I don't want to hand
edit all those files!

Whoa there, John... I'd read the fine print first. Not all of the
software on disk-based magazines is freely distrubutable.

Ed is right. I found a number of good things on mag disks that I would have
uploaded if they didn't have copyright notices all over them. They usually have
a selection of pd stuff that we already have from usenet or by way of the
PLINKers, and some stuff I haven't seen that is copyrighted and not PD.

Good point. I'll make sure whatever I put up is safe.

I seem to remember Amiga Times saying spread the disk around. The others
may not be so liberal.

Thanks for the warning!

2788.10Gotten your new Compute? :-(CADSE::CARRAsleep at the mouseTue Sep 18 1990 22:0020
It's been a while since anyone's touched this note, but since my copy
of Compute showed up in my mailbox today, I figured I'd ask what others
think. For those who don't know, Compute!, Compute's Amiga Resource and
their other mags were bought out over the summer (same company that
produces Penthouse?) Amiga Resource is now bundled together with all
the other pc articles in the same issue (though they say that the
subscription issues only contain the Amiga section & the generic pc
section, leaving out all the Mac & C64/128 specific stuff).

Their word processor review was watered down, the number of articles
that contained actual code (which I like to read through) totalled 1,
and in general the quality is just not the same. They do insist that
the amount of Amiga info will be more in its (now) monthly format than
in the previous bi-monthly format. I'm disappointed, but will continuing
receiving it til the subscription runs out. Amiga Resource was one of
    the better Amiga mags.

    Comments?

I agree completely. I think that Amiga Resource _was_ one of the
better mags, but in it's present format, is history. I will not be
    resubscribing.

Is the Amiga market really big enough to support more than one or two
magazine formats anyway? AmigaWorld is needed to make things look
professional, and Amazing carries enough technical info to keep hackers
    happy.

    Ed.
2788.12MSVAX::BARRETTI must not waste bandwidthWed Sep 19 1990 10:493
I am also disappointed by the change - the new magazine was exactly
what I expected it to be. My attitude is to ignore the whole thing
and let it go away - I will not be re-subscribing either.

Add .INFO for home use/hacking/games with a gonzo twist, and you
have three mags with three perspectives. I liked Amiga Resource
too but understand the market shake down.

Anyone know if Antic's Amiga+ will continue? I don't know where it fits into
the picture.
