2740.1 | Could it be a memory problem? | CSOA1::LEN | David M. Len | Mon Jul 17 1989 11:30 | 5 |
| I have 1.3 roms on my 2000 and have not experienced any problems
running Falcon.
Do both 500s have the same amount of memory? Also, if one has
additional floppies, that will use additional memory for the buffers.

| RE FALCON ON AMIGA 500
I HAVE 1.3 ROMS ON MY A500 AND HAVE ONLY FOUND PROBLEMS WITH LOADING
WHEN I HAVE MY SECOND DRIVE SWITCHED ON. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT
I HAVE A BRITISH MACHINE AND THE BRITISH VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE. I'VE
HAD PROBLEMS BEFORE LOADING SOFTWARE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES ESPECIALLY ON
MY 64 WHEN I HAD ONE.

I currently only have 512K memory, but I do have 2 disk drives.
There are programs out there such as Battle Chess which will not
work with 512K if there is an external drive attached. I am almost
positive that I checked this with Falcon, but I better check again.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Does anyone know if Spectrum
Holobyte will be releasing a version which will run on all Amiga's,
especially for those people with the 68020's? It is much too good
a simulation to be neglected because of incompatability problems.
Thanks for your responses,
- Jeff C.

2740.4 | Add a 501 | EMC2::PELLATT | Stand in the place where you are | Tue Jul 18 1989 05:48 | 10 |
| This is a known "limitation" of Falcon ( discussed elsewhere in
Note ???? ) and the documentation with my copy states that
Falcon will NOT boot on an Amiga with a second drive.
Dave
P.S. I just upgraded my memory and Falcon now produces a whole load
of more interesting noises I never heard with 512K, as well
as letting you analyse your dogfighting with the 'Black Box'
( bit of a gimic actually ).

Is this also true with the latest V1.1 release?

| re: .4 and .5
There must be some further qualification to the statement "Falcon
will NOT boot on an Amiga with a second drive". My 2000 has 2 internal
floppies and I have not had any problem with Falcon.

| I think that's "512K 2 drive machines".
Your 2000 has 1Meg.

2740.8 | They use every bit of memory | PENUTS::JCANHA | | Wed Jul 19 1989 17:45 | 14 |

Falcon will work with my Amiga 500 (512K) and 1 disk drive connected,
but not both drives (The ROM's had nothing to do with it).
This same problem occurs with Battle Chess and it is due to the
large amount of RAM which is required to run these programs. Just
having the drive connected to the Amiga requires some memory, which
in the case of these two games is enough to cause it to run out
of RAM.
Thanks for reminding me of this problem,
- Jeff C.

| Falcon works for me on a 1MB 500 with an external drive connected. 1.2
ROMS (if that really counts) and a PAL system and possibly a PAL
version of FALCON (?).

2740.10 | < My 1.3 ROM story > | WOODRO::TTAYLOR | | Sat Dec 09 1989 19:40 | 11 |
| After adding a v1.3 ROM and a 40 Meg drive to my A2000. My Falcon
doesnt run all of the sound effects. Specifically guns, missles
and the engine sound. All others work fine. I can boot off the
original copies of the game bypassing the H/D and the game works
perfectly. If I attempt to run Falcon off of the H/D's workbench
using the same floppies I again encounter the sound problem.
Any suggestions ?
Thanx,
Todd

Your 2000 probably only has 1 Meg or RAM, right?
If so, then adding a hard drive means adding driver's and handlers for it,
which eat up memory. This extra overhead for the hard disk has pushed you
free memory low enough that Falcon tosses some of the sound effects.
I think it's in the Falcon docs.

2740.12 | 1 Meg of memory won't cut it | BANKS1::TAYLOR | | Mon Dec 11 1989 10:34 | 6 |
| Yes, it's a stock (as for now) A2000 with 1Meg of RAM. I'd felt
that the overhead reqd. by the drivers were the cause of the problem.
I have 2 Meg of DRAM on order. Thanx for the input.
