2731.1 | My thoughts (are free)! | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Thu Jul 13 1989 01:45 | 12 |
| Some (perhaps obvious) things:
1) when you boot WorkBench, Ctrl/D immediately after the screen goes
blue so none of the startup-sequence has a chance to do anything
that would take memory away. (or rename startup-sequence, etc..)
2) if you have an external drive, unplug it. This frees up some
memory, but I don't know how much really.
Good luck!

| How did you get 780K, was it major surgery or just a routine operation?

2731.3 | Minor surgery, kickstart ROM's | XCUSME::FITANIDES | | Mon Jul 17 1989 17:26 | 8 |
| I had a friend install Kickstart 1.3 into ROM on the 1000's
motherboard. Apparently, Amiga wanted to do that anyway, but
they decided to put Kickstart on a disk so it was easier to
modify it. Now I have an extra 280+K (or somewhere around that).
Mike, from Digital Connection in Dover, NH (603-742-2233) did the
modification for $60. It was well worth it!

Can you give any more info on this? Has anyone else tried it? This would
sure be nice (assuming, of course, that you socketed the ROM). Any hints
about what had to be done?

2731.5 | Call Mike or Tony @ (603) 742-2233 | XCUSME::FITANIDES | | Tue Jul 18 1989 20:49 | 22 |
| My brother also has a ROM-Kickstart modified 1000 which works perfectly
fine. The ROMS are socketed, and Mike is the guy to call to do
the work. If you would like to do it yourself, he would probably
tell you how to do it. Both Steve (the owener) and Mike of Digital
Connection are very cool people and also have a cool user group
(the Seacoast Area Amiga Users Group [SAAUG]), not to mention, both
Mike and his pal, Tony, have KILLER BBS's which you must check out.
Mike's BBS phone # is: 743-4285 (I don't know Tony's); both Mike
and Tony have over 300 Megs, EACH, online! Lotsa stuff, and a cool
BBS. Mike's BBS supports 9600 and 19.2 K baud, I believe. Also,
he designed the BBS and will sell it to you for about $70 (I think).
Mike is a MAJOR hardware hacker and so is Tony. They both have
KILLER Amiga systems. Tony's system at work has a GVP 68030 at
25MHz with the 68882 at 33 MHz, 4Megs 32bit DRAM and a mega drive
(or two). He says he uses it to "play" at work. Some toy! Give
Mike a call at Digital Connection (603-742-2233) to get more info.
I'm not a tech (I'm a programmer), so all this hardware stuff is
Japanese to me. Mike and Tony are the real wizards--give 'em a
ring.
