2729.1 | DOWNLOAD NOTE ALSO | HXOA01::STEEVES | | Wed Jul 12 1989 08:38 | 18 |
| SOUNDS GREAT!!
I BELIEVE WE SHOULD KEEP THE NOTICE ABOUT THE "FOR SALE NOTE", PERMANENTLY
IN THE OPENING SCREEN FOR NEW USERS.
WOULD THIS FORMAT ALSO BE A GOOD IDEA FOR NOTES ON SOFTWARE AVAILABLE
FOR DOWNLOADS? THERE ARE A LOT OF NOTES SCATTERED IN THE CONFERENCE
LISTING LOCATIONS OF DOWNLOADABLE SOFTWARE, MOST OF WHICH ARE
NON-EXISTANT. I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE ON THIS, HAVING JUST RECENTLY
FINISHED READING ALL THE NOTES IN THIS CONFERENCE(NOT ALL THE REPLIES,
MIND YOU).

I don't agree with this. You would end up with a note with thousands of
replies. I would support a common note that contained the address and usage
rules for systems that serve as libraries. The value of the current format
is that often there is a discusion relating to a new download that would not
fit well into a common "download" note. The keyword "download" is useful in
finding the location of notes that have the location or describe downloads.
I was setting this on these notes but decided after a while that the list
was just too big to be useful.
A really good common note would be a beginner's note that contains chapters
that carefully explain (correctly) how to deal with the problems of
downloading and some of the other questions that get asked over and over
again. if someone would write it or paste it together from good notes here
and then it could be posted as a reply to a how-to note. When someone finds
a need to update a chapter the old reply would be replaced by the moderator
with the new one.
Any volenteers?

2729.3 | | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Wed Jul 12 1989 12:20 | 11 |
| I agree with Tom. Reserved notes tend to go way off on tangents and never
have the content that the moderator originally intended. When I want to find
out about a certain piece of PD software, I first try a DIR/TITLE hoping that
the name is in the title.
I think a note listing amiga "libraries" on the net would be great, however.
That would be something that would be easily containable. Also a complete
note on "How to download" would be great since we seem to hit on this every
few hundred notes or so.

| OK, PERHAPS THE IDEA OF A DOWNLOAD NOTE WOULDN'T BE PRACTICAL, BUT IT
SEEMS A SHAME THAT SOME OF THE PD SOFTWARE MENTIONED IN THESE NOTES
OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS ISN'T STILL AVAILABLE!

2729.5 | Yes, a Download Procedure note is in order | GIAMEM::I_SHAW | I hate LJ252-Amiga problems. | Wed Jul 12 1989 13:59 | 6 |
| I second (third?) the vote to add not only the locations, but an
in-depth guide on how to download. I have had my Amiga for nine months
now, and a lack of time has resulted in relativlely zero system knowlege.
I would greatly appreciate a comprehensive "how to" note.
