2714.1 | A couple you can try | MQOFS::DESROSIERS | Lets procrastinate....tomorrow | Wed Jul 05 1989 13:41 | 10 |
| PACKMANIA (sp?) great graphics, fast. A 3D version of Packman.
you can jump OVER the gosts!
GIANNA also great graphics. A clone of Mario bros. on nintendos.
There are more, but since I am not a game player, I am not up on
the latest, but those two are impressive enough to get hooked on.

If you can be more specific as to what kind of games you like, maybe we
can help you. There are arcade blast 'em, strategy, role-playing,
classic (chess etc), flight simulators and adventure types.
If you're dissatisfied with Amiga games in general, I suggest you give
up on computers and stick to the arcade machines. Home computer games
just don't get any better than Amiga versions.

2714.3 | my $0.02 | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Diehard the hunter | Wed Jul 05 1989 21:29 | 12 |
| Arcade style games: Hybris is nice...also Sidewinder
Role Playing games...The Bards tale (particularly if you like mapping)
Interactive strategy/arcade games: Lords of the Rising sun,Rocket
ranger (Though both these have the typically
annoying Cinamaware text screens throughout)
Misc: Hostage is fun...heaps of difficulty levels...a catchy tune
or 2...reasonable graphics (though nothing marvellous)

2714.7 | My votes -good and bad | JGO::CHAPMAN | | Thu Jul 06 1989 04:25 | 31 |
| My votes - in order of the amount of time spent sitting in front
of it !
1) Dungeon Master - by a long, long, way
2) Interceptor - an easy second
3) Populous - a new purchase, haven't got to grips with it yet but
looks good.
4) Silent Service
On the other hand, I have to agree with .0 that there is a lot of
tat about as well. It mays to read this notes file. Any mini-reviews
of new games, good and BAD appreciated!
My votes for some to save your money on.
Defender of the Crown - this has put me off Cinemaware ever since
(maybe unfairly)
Zany Golf - another new purchase, based on one of the best reviews
ever in a UK magazine. Slow, boring, mainly such bad
graphics that you can't see the ball. One nice graphic of a bouncing
hamburger, but how long can you look at that for?
And a couple I've had problems getting gripped by, although I accept
they have virtues:
Starglider II
Balance of Power
|
2714.8 | Starglider II: good, but bad | GIAMEM::LAFLAMME | MIDInet...on the way! | Thu Jul 06 1989 09:36 | 8 |
| I don't know if this has been talked about, but Starglider II doesn't
`save game' properly (maybe it's fixed now). I really liked the game, but I
always got bored and killed myself in interesting ways. If I could have saved
the game and progressed according to the story...
--mikie--
who traded it in for Rocket Ranger, which isn't much better, imo...

2714.9 | wargames? | ALASKA::QUIRICI | | Thu Jul 06 1989 16:46 | 27 |
| Here's some strategic/tactic (military):
From SSI:
Rebel Charge at Chickamauga - excellent; addictive if you're into
military simulations. Very nice screens, plays very well. Fixes almost
all the problems with their Gettyburg - too slow, doesn't play well.
From ?:
The Battle of the Ardennes (or something like that) - this can be
addictive if you ignore some problems: the maps are very hard to read
and kind of simplistic (SSI uses contours for more accurate elevation
indication, and allows terrain to be both hilly AND wooded, whereas
this one only allows one or the other). But it plays pretty well.
From ?:
Universal Military Simulator (or like that) - a puzzle. Although
I've read really positive reviews, I myself found the display (i.e.
map) to be really hard to get accustomed to. I can't help but think
this is one of those one-gimmick products pushed more by marketing
types than real game players. The idea is good - a three-dimensional
view of the battlefield - but i have a feeling the amiga is not [yet]
strong enough to do a good job with it.
There! more than you wanted to know about wargames on the amiga.

2714.10 | BloodMoney.... | USRCV1::HOLTJ | | Fri Jul 07 1989 02:24 | 14 |
| I picked up a copy of "Bloodmoney" by PSYGNOSIS and in terms of
sound, graphics, and gameplay is simply one the finest games I have
seen for the Amiga. This software is one of the few games that
takes full advantage of the Amiga's capabilities. We played it
out of the box for 6 hours. Two of my neighbors (one has an Atari
and the other has a PC clone) played with me when I first got it;
Both neighbors are now in the process of selling their machines
to get an Amiga 500 and Bloodmoney...

P.S.
(In terms of games, I also have Dragon's Lair, TV Sports Football, and F18)

| This is also by Psygnosis and it's a killer. I picked it up last
week and have already spent too much time on it. Saving games is
a must. Good blend of strategy and action. Great sampled screams

2714.12 | Vyper | DPDMAI::ANDERSONA | | Sat Jul 08 1989 16:53 | 6 |
| My vote goes for Vyper by Top Down. It is real similar to the old
Arcade game Galaxia, only faster and with more variety, and no quarter
slot.

2714.13 | Populous | CURRNT::HERBERT | Herbie Goes Bananas | Tue Jul 11 1989 10:02 | 19 |
|
Here's a few games which I rate quite highly:-
Populous - One of the best and original games to date on the Amiga,
go out and buy it! (Electronic Arts?)
Silkworm - A brilliant arcade conversion, lots of sprites all moving
at great speed. Nice two player option. (Virgin)
Kick Off - The best footy game around on the Amiga. This is an
arcade game with throw-ins, corner kicks, penalties,
yellow and red cards. The player control is tricky
to start with but you'll soon be performing overhead kicks
with the greatest of ease!!!

2714.14 | Here is what I think.. | GUCCI::HERB | | Tue Jul 11 1989 23:14 | 13 |
| I have played double dribble on a nintendo and then played fastbreak
on a amiga. Even though the amiga had better graphics and sound
then the nintendo the nintendo game was much funner. It is this
way for a lot of games.
I like a amiga game that has smooth movemont,good control of your
character and quick paced. The only game on the amiga that I have
that are like that is Hybris,speedball and space pilot 89. Get thos
games!

2714.15 | more stuff... | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Wed Jul 12 1989 12:11 | 9 |
| I've just played Menace recently and found it to have good, smooth-scrolling
graphics just like Hybris. Unfortunately, the game play is almost exactly
like Hybris too (except that you shoot and move to the right instead of up
the screen). Still, it's a pretty good one.
re: .-1 (Speedball) I can't keep up with this one!! That ball flys around
real, REAL fast!

2714.16 | | GUCCI::HERB | | Wed Jul 12 1989 22:29 | 6 |
| Another thing I liked about nintendo is that the control pad had
4 buttons instead of 1. Really improves gamplay. Yea,speedball is
the fastes paced game I have ever played.

2714.17 | Better game controller not to hard to make | CAM::ARENDT | Harry Arendt CAM:: | Thu Jul 13 1989 08:54 | 17 |
|
RE .16
A better game controller can easily be built with parts from
your local Radio Shack. I built one which has all buttons and
used it on "Space Killers". this works best with rotaional games.
Of course the best would be if CBM would come up with a game controller
with a proportioanal joystick and buttons. By the way my research
indicates that the hardware could support two such controllers with
each having an analog joystick and at least two buttons. (I will
post the exact figure.) Anyone interested in starting a company?
Would DEC let us keep our real jobs till we became rich?
I will post the schematic and details sometime next week.

2714.19 | responsive! fast! kinetic! | AIAG::WISNER | you may ask yourself 'How do I work this?'. | Mon Jul 24 1989 19:57 | 8 |
| I have always felt that too many Amiga games have detailed complex animation
at the expense of game play...
If you like fast action- really insane games that make you sweat- then
Datastorm is the king of the hill. It's a Defender clone that is better than
the Arcade version, with many, many added suprises.
That's my biased opinion (I am severly addicted to this game).

2714.20 | tooo much detail | GUCCI::HERB | | Mon Jul 31 1989 22:32 | 5 |
| Yeah,I agree with .19. Look at some of the 8-bit games. Simple graphics
but smooth animation and fast.

2714.21 | Anyone like Carrier Command? | SHIPS::NEAL_D | | Fri Nov 17 1989 05:40 | 9 |
|
I know its been around a while but I've just got my hands on Carrier
Command and find it pretty good.
It's a starglider type game where you control an aircraft carrier,
planes, amphibious vehicles and use resources to overcome another
enemy carrier in a group of islands. All in filled 3d as well.
Try it you can probably get it quite cheaply.

2714.22 | Datastorm | CAM::ARENDT | Harry Arendt CAM:: | Mon Dec 04 1989 10:59 | 38 |
| I bought Datastorm this weekend because I loved to play defender.
The game is good but not as playable as I would like. It is too
fast! Can you believe it? Actually with a slight modification of
the control parameters and some different joystick stuff it would
be a little better. Maybe the new gravis joystick would be better?
This is definitely a bang-bang shoot-em-up.
A few facts;
1. The up/down motion responds very fast however with the joystick
in the level position the ship tends to sink by itself which
is a pain because it will not hover and rises and sinks to fast.
2. Direction is controlled by the right and left of the joystick.
This is not as good as having a reverse direction and a thrust
button or a reverse direction and have the current direction
be thrust and the reverse be braking. The problem with the
current scheme is that when I stopped forward motion there
was a marked tendency to reverse direction, this made shooting
at a fast moving target very difficult. However shooting in
both direction was easy.
3. The fast targets were killers.
4. Two player modes were fun. There were 4 modes.
a. One player.
b. Two players alternate with one joystick.
b. Two players alternate with two joysticks.
b. Two players together.
5. I was unable to back up the game using marauder.
Overall I would give this game;
10 - Graphics & Sound
7 - Joystick motion.
8 - Overall play.

2714.23 | American Football - I need more | KERNEL::JENKINSD | | Tue Oct 16 1990 17:52 | 24 |
| I would recommend TV Sports Football to all those who love
American Football. I have had many hours of fustrating
enjoyment playing this game.
Also a game I purchesed the other day is KICK OFF 2 which is
a socer game that has all the thrills and spills of the worlds
greatest sport with action replys that you can save and look
at time and time again.
Could anybody please recommend any good Sports Games that are
currently on the market. Especially American Football Games
as I have heard rumours about a new game that is better than
TV Sports Football but have no idea when it is going to be
released or what it actually does that is different to TV Sports
Football.
If anybody in the States (The home of Football) knows of any
American Football games that are not totally mind games, could
they mail me on KERNEL::JenkinsD.
