    Hi,
    
    1.) refer to note 2419.* in this conference about the tech. infos
        for a lot of different drive types.
    
    2.) short infos: check the following:
    	is this a ST506/ST412 MFM or RLL encoding drive or is
    	ST-412 the product type. if it's the type then this should be
    	the same as a RD51 - see note 2419.1 for drive infos (power
    	timing, cylinders and so on)
    
    3.) misc.comments: i think these 'older' drives are not approved
        for RLL so the "2090A-fan-clubs" are crying :
    	Buy a controller named Commodore 2090A. But it's not cheap!!!
	With this device comes a driver for HD's, installation-
    	procedure, docs, mounting instructions ...and ..and..
        	
    	BTW i'm running a Omti-RLL controller and it works fine.

	All I know is that it looks like a regular huge winchester (full
height) and dad never got around to buying the Rainbow controller for it,
so I assume it is the drive (like an RD51).

	How not cheap is it??  And does it support autoboot?  If my drive is
like the RD51, then it is only 10M.  This is not too bad, seeing as how I
already have it (my dad gave it to me), but if it costs a heck of a lot to 
put in, I don't know, maybe it'll collect dust...
	It's just the right size for me, 'cause it'll hold most of my common
applications.

    A2090a prices vary, you should be able to get one in the range of
    $200-350. 
    And yes, it's autobooting.
    And no, trying to live with a 10MB drive on an Amiga is masochism.

    I know wherof I speak, I'm looking to connect a 200-300MB SCSI HD
    and an 150/300 MB opto/magnetic disk (the eraseable kind) to my
    overcrowded 90MB system.

    Ok,
    let's say it is an RD51. (My reference is the good note 2419)
    Older drives work with the MFM encoding method. So the drive
    should have a formatted capacity of ~ 10MB. (better than nothing)

        You need a HD-controller. The CBM 2090A costs about $350 without
    HD and ~ $500 with 20MB Disk. (IN GERMANY !!!)
    This controller comes with a lot of docs and utilities:
    You need: a philips screwdriver to open your Amiga (voids warranty)
    plug in the controller in one of the Amiga-slots connect the
    cables in the CORRECT way. then copy the HD-driver software
    to your DEVS: directory. Then start the PREP-utility and
    follow the instructions and the docs .....
    (if there are mistakes, would one of the 2090-gurus correct me??)
    
    The CBM 2090A (the 'A'-type) is an autoboot controller !
    To use this feature you need to have the Version 1.3 Kickstart-ROMS.
    
    There are a lot of other controllers out in the Amiga-market.
    Most (ALL?) of them are coming with docs and installation-
    utilities. So is no problem to install a Hard-Disk.
    BUT -- read the manual FIRST.

    with NNN MB-comments. 8^)
    sure it's better to have 600 MB and a good tape-streamer,
    but 10 MB for 0 $ is good, and sometimes later you could upgrade
    to a MMMMMMMMMMMMegabyte-Drive and use your 10 MB-drive as a BACKUP-
    medium.

    And,
    
    the 2090A has SCSI-ports, so this would be a good investment
    for the future when SCSI-Disks and Tapes become CHEAPER.
