2694.1 | Memory problems! | SYSTEM::HELLIAR | | Wed Jun 28 1989 09:41 | 13 |
| I bought it for my Sister 4 months ago. She's running an A500. What is
says it can do is pretty spectacular and playing with it myself I
thought it was worth the money.
However she used to use it a lot and it kept crashing, loosing data,
wouldn't handle multiple fonts etc etc. This is all contradictory to
the manual. She did find a little sentence buried deep in the manual
which said that for the best performance 1 Meg is required (for best
they obviously mean without it forget it!).
IF you've got one meg then give me a ring as I would like to know if
this does cure the problems and would be willing to 'lend' you the
software to try it out (providing I can copy the originals).

| My wife uses it. I think it's somewhat limited compared to ProWrite,
but it's got a good spelling checker. My biggest gripe with it is
that it won't read or write files to the hard disk---you must copy
a file to RAM before editing it, and copy it back to hard disk
afterwards.

2694.4 | My $0.02 | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Diehard the hunter | Wed Jun 28 1989 17:22 | 16 |
| I use it on a 1meg machine....I think it is value for the money
you pay (it cost me around $115 US) but next time...I would save
a little harder and go up-market a little...
Kindwords seems to be constantly re-drawing the screen and its
cut/paste facility would have to be one of the slowest on record.
I have had numerous gurus also. Good spelling checker tho...could
still mabye do with a little expansion.
I guess it depends what your after...if you want a simple,reasonably
cheap WP package - its a good enough deal...just dont expect it
to perform miricles......
Cheers

2694.5 | slow, and a bit strange | JFRSON::OSBORNE | Blade Walker | Thu Jun 29 1989 10:12 | 23 |
| I use it on a 3 meg 2000. It seems to do what it claims, and I haven't
gotten any gurus lately. I don't have any trouble reading and writing
to a hard disk. I think the manual specifies how to move the program
and its dictionary to hard disk, anyway it was no big deal. It produces
a fair NLQ output on my old Epson JX_80. It is supposed to incorporate
graphics into your text, but I haven't done enough with this to say
how good it is. The latest version has a speller, a thesaurus, and
print merge. I've tried all these and they all work, though the merge
is pretty strange. It has "SuperFonts", which provide a few styles
and sizes of typeface, plus "math", Greek, foreign, and character-
cell graphics.
But it's very SLOW. As mentioned, it redraws the screen whenever you
mouse the cursor, scroll, cut, paste, or put up a requester or window
over the text window. It has three print modes, one being "draft", and
even to print "draft" seems to take 30 seconds or so to start printing.
Sometimes the screen display can get pretty strange, although it has
somehow recovered.
I use it for an occasional letter. For serious writing, I'd get something
faster and less bizarre.

2694.6 | Carefull with graphics claims..... | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Diehard the hunter | Thu Jun 29 1989 17:24 | 46 |
|
be careful with the "supports graphics" claim...yeah it supports
IFF graphics, BUT you get a full page or NOTHING! I used Deluxepaint
to design a nice little letterhead for a social club I'm active
in. When I imported it into KW It drew a box the size of a std screen
(lo-res) around the letterhead. The letterhead was only about
3cm high. The box looks like this
O-------------------------------O------------------------------O
| L E T T E R H E A D W A S A L O N G T H E T O P H E R E |
| L E T T E R H E A D W A S A L O N G T H E T O P H E R E |
| L E T T E R H E A D W A S A L O N G T H E T O P H E R E |
| |
| "Y" |
O O
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
O-------------------------------O------------------------------O
"X"
At each of the points that I have marked an "O" was a little box.
The doc says you can place the pointer on the boxes and move the
graphics area around to re-size your graphics. Now I took this to
mean that I could move point "X" to point "Y" and then carry on
with the letter leaving the letterhead intact. NOT SO! when I tried
this...KW crushed the IFF letterhead into an unreadable pulp my
only option was to print 30 copies of the letterhead and re-feed
the paper thru the printer and create a new doc/print again.

2694.7 | There's more than what you see. | VCSESU::MOORE | Tom Moore MRO1-3/SL1 297-5224 | Thu Jun 29 1989 17:57 | 8 |
| Your problem might in what you outputted from DPaint II. You can control the
size of the picture. If you had changed the size of you picture to just
include your leterhead, the box you saw might have been just what you
wanted. In other words, KW might have justly assumed that the white space
after your letterhead was something you wanted. Give it a try. I'd be
curious if it worked. Drop me a line if you need further help on resizing
the output from DPaint II. I don't have a manual handy.

2694.8 | brushes; AmigaTeX | SAUTER::SAUTER | John Sauter | Thu Jun 29 1989 18:35 | 7 |
| When I have run into problems of that sort, I have solved them by
creating a "brush". A brush can be of any size smaller than the
screen, and programs which can read IFF files can read brushes.
For serious work, though, I don't use either KindWords or ProWrite.
I use AmigaTeX. All three of these packages can read IFF files.

2694.9 | ProWrite plug | LEDS::ACCIARDI | | Fri Jun 30 1989 02:29 | 5 |

ProWrite handles brushes nicely, and can flow text around, or over the
graphic. It also updates the screen quite quickly.

2694.10 | TWO MORE QUESTIONS ON KINDWORDS | PEKING::WILLIAMSC | | Tue Jul 04 1989 10:28 | 21 |
| Two more questions regarding KindWords
I have followed the instructions to copy the program and dictionary
to the hard disk. My problem now is how to I get the dictionary
to work? I also added the "assign Dictionary: dh0 KindWords" to
the Workbench (also located on the hard disk)
I have created a document and when I ask it to spell check, I get
a message saying "Please put dictionary in df0". Have I done something
wrong as the only way I can get the dictionary to work is to put
the dictionary disk in df0 and copy to memory.
Question 2:
Is there any way in which I can save the documents to a 5.25" floppy
instead of the 3.5" disks. If so, how do I do it.
Just for reference I have an Amiga B2000 with 20mb hard disk,
1 x 3.5" disk and 1 x 5.25" floppy drives.

2694.11 | 5.25" works just like 3.5" | SAUTER::SAUTER | John Sauter | Wed Jul 05 1989 08:48 | 7 |
| re: .10
I can deal with the second part, since I have a 5.25" floppy drive.
If you use the AmigaDOS commands to MOUNT and FORMAT a floppy, you
should be able to write a file to it just like you write a file to
a 3.5" floppy.

2694.12 | How do I MOUNT? | PEKING::WILLIAMSC | | Tue Aug 22 1989 05:25 | 10 |
| I'm sorry I appear to be a little slow, but could you explain how
I MOUNT the 5.25" drive.
I know how to get into CLI but where do I type the MOUNT commands
and what do I call the 5.25" drive so that the Amiga recognises
it?
Thanks in advance

2694.13 | Is Anybody There? | ODDONE::RANKIN_J | | Thu Oct 11 1990 12:25 | 23 |
| Is anybody out there using KindWords 2.0?
I,ve just obtained it with a bundled package and I think its great! I
particularly like its quirkiness some of which has been referred to.
(There must be something wrong with me!) To me its like some French
cars, Eccentric because they,re different in some ways but lots of fun
because of it. Anyway sometimes things can be too "professional". For
#30 its super value and does my letters proud!
The point of the mail is to ask for some help( and this request is
pretty basic).
How can I get KindWords to load straight from disk without going
through the Workbench sequence?
I,ve been told to edit the start-up sequence and replace workbench with
Kindwords but I cant get any response to ED on the Kindwords CLI.
Has anyone done this?
Also how do I keep my Screen Options permanently on the Kindwords disk?
Are these Naff questions? Help would be appreciated.

2694.14 | Run KindWords | CSC32::A_ANDERSON | DTN 592-4170 NSU/VAX | Thu Oct 11 1990 23:38 | 14 |
| Maybe I do not understand the question. I just tried it, in my case
everything is on the harddisk in a sub directory.
CD DH0:KindWords
run KindWords.
Up it came no problem.
Does this help?

2694.15 | Font Installation? | SHIRE::FITZGERALD | Software is the solution | Fri Oct 12 1990 10:34 | 15 |
| I have recently bought a package called "Publish it" which included
Kindwords, Publish it, CaleFontsII, a disk of images, the Superfonts
disk and a disk of laser fonts. (Cost about $70). All of the above is
in French, including the manual.
I have been succesful in getting the Publish IT torun the Cale Fonts,
but totally unsuccessful in getting the CaleFonts to come up on the
Kindwords font menu. Any ideas? I have been trying this by putting an
"ASSIGN FONTS: CFII:CaleFontsII" in the startup sequence. When it
executes that it reads the CaleFonts disk and all seems to be well.
However, they do not appear on the Kindwords menu.
HELP!
