I have a few questions concerning buying a German-made Amiga
to take back to the UK. The questions should probably be directed
to UK and/or German Amiga users, but I would certainly appreciate
anyones' input.
I have been told by a salesman, here in Munich that due to voltage
differences and "other reasons", a German-made Amiga cannot be used
in the UK. I was under the impression that computers are made
with a 10% voltage tolerance. Since UK voltage is 240v and German
voltage is 220v, this difference should prove acceptable.
1. Does the salesman know what he's talking about ? (Does any salesman ?)
What possible "other reasons" could there be ?
Assuming that I can buy here, I know that I will have to contact
Commodore UK for English documentation.
2. Are Commodore helpful in this area ?
One of the reasons for buying here, is the very attractive price;
currently around 15% cheaper than the UK. If the price of the
documentation (from any manufacturer, usually *much* more expensive
than buying with a machine) is exorbitant, than it defeats the object
of buying here. Anyone have any ideas on this ?
3. Is there anything else that I should be aware (or beware) of ?
Thanks in advance,
Rick Taylor

I think you should check up on how you intend bringing the Amiga
back to the UK. I believe you will be charged duty and VAT - which
kinda negates the 15% saving.
Also, when you say around 15% saving in price, is that 15% off the
standard price charged by Amiga dealers, or 15% off the price charged
by the box shifters (grey importers?)
I got mine (B2000, 1084S, WB1.3) from First Micro, Southampton. It was
1095, inclusive of VAT and postage, and they threw in DPAINT and
SPRITZ. I ordered it on a Wednesday, and it duely arrived on Monday;
in perfect working order.
But guess where it came from? You guessed it, Germany (that's where
they make 'em for Europe, isn't it?)

Re point 0.I just got my Amiga 500 on Saturday. The prices vary
greatly. In Amiga User international the two prices for a package
which I used as a basis, varied by 60.00 for more or less the
same kit.
Power wise the 500 requires 99-121 volts ac 54-66hz.In the UK a
power supply is issued as part of the package. Incidently my 500
was manufactured in Taiwan & the monitor (Philips 8833) was from
Hong Kong.
