2622.1 | No need for A4000 | WJG::GUINEAU | | Mon Jun 05 1989 09:06 | 8 |

I thought the A2090A still had an ST506 port (in addition to a SCSI port)?
If so, you don't need the Adaptec 4000, just plug the RD53 straight in.
Otherwise, it *should* work.

2622.2 | Cables = 1 foot = too short. | SUBURB::MCDONALDA | Old Elysian with a big D.I.C. | Mon Jun 05 1989 09:19 | 17 |
| Re .1
I'm trying to work out which is the lesser of two evils:
Extend the ST-506 cables which came with the RD-53, and feed them
out of an Ami port
or
Connect it relatively cleanly to the SCSI port via an Adaptec 4000.
The ST-506 cables aren't long enough. I'll either have to find some,
buy some, or get the old soldering iron out. I'm not entirely sure
if extending the cables by a foot won't screw up timings during
transfers.

2622.3 | WILL NOT WORK!!! | FRAMBO::BALZER | Christian Balzer DTN:785-1029 | Mon Jun 05 1989 11:00 | 9 |
| I'm using a Micropolis 1325 = RD53 on my 2090 st506 port w/o problems.
And no, the Adaptec will NOT work, since it requires some setting
information from the controller which the 2090 (software) will not
provide. You could however install the Adaptec and HD with another
controller (Supra, Cltd etc) and then transfer them to the 2090.
This whole story has been discussed on UseNet recently, try to get
hold of it, if not I could post a copy.

2622.4 | External ST506? No Problem... | AKOV11::SMITH | Ed... | Mon Jun 05 1989 11:52 | 12 |
| I running and a second ST506 drive externally on a custom cable
I built (about 4 feet) without any problems. I mounted the drive
in an RX180 case (VT180 Robin drive expansion) and wired up a DB25
connector to convert the 2 flat ST506 ribbon cables. The DB25
connector is then mounted on the back of my A2000. I built a 4
foot DB25 straight through cable for between the A2000 and the RX180
and then converted back to 2 flat ribbon cables inside the RX180
case. A little bit of work but it gives a nice neat package.
I been using this now for several months without any problems.

2622.5 | So what's a few more cables in the back? | MQOFS::DESROSIERS | Lets procrastinate....tomorrow | Mon Jun 05 1989 12:58 | 7 |
| I have an RD51 sitting naked in the back of my 2000. It is connected
with 2 24" flat ribbon cables and is even powered from the 2000's
power supply. Working well.

All DEC RDxx drives were qualified using 10 foot cables and worst case
conditions (temperature/voltage).
Be carefull of long power cables. Check the voltage AT THE DRIVE end to be sure.
4.75 and 12.40 are lowest acceptable (-5%)

Ok fellas and felines :-)
Here's the the UseNet article I was talking about:

It's true, Dan. The 2090 prep software does not know how to handle an
Adaptec. The Adaptec needs a "Mode Select" SCSI command before doing
a low level format. This tells the adaptec the physical drive parameters.
Real SCSI drives don't need (or want) this since the drive already knows
about itself. It *should* be possible to write a program which does the
mode select and low level format. Once that is done (it is a one shot
thing), you could prep normally.

And my RD53 is sitting butt naked on my Ami with ~1m cable length...
