2604.0. "Help with arc023.bin" by OPG::ANGUS (Old Elysian with a big D.I.C.) Sat May 27 1989 16:39

    Sorry if this is boring, but I am having one or two problems getting
    ARC going on my 2000.

    I copied TAPE::USER1:[AMIGA.ARC]ARC023.bin, and used Kermit under the
    VT200 emulator to transfer to my Amy. The transfers (I did it about 5
    times) seemed O.K (all 50688 bytes). I even copied it to the C
    directory as arc.

    When I run arc, it appears to load for about 10-15 seconds before the
    error message appears saying that arc: is not an object module.

    I copied arc23.arc, but this failed even quicker. I even CVTARCed
    arc023.bin before kermiting.

    Any ideas?

    Some further info:

    kermit32> set delay 15
    kermit32> set file type binary
    kermit32> send arc023.bin

    comms set to IMAGE, 8-bit, 1 stop, no parity. I looked at the file on
    the VAX and on my Amy.

    I have WB 1.3. Running most stuff off DF0: or RAM:

    Any help appreciated,
    Angus

Make sure you kermit it as a binary and not as text or converted. When I
invoke kermit, I do it this way to keep myself out of trouble.

    Doesn't work. This is definately getting frustrating.

    When you type 'dir/full' on the VMS end, what file format is ARC023.bin
    listed as? STREAM_LF, 510 byte variable, etc...

    Different transfer protocols are frequently sensitive to the source
    file format. There are utilities on VMS to convert files from various
    formats into more Kermit and Xmodem-friendly formats.

    By the way, Xmodem is about twice as fast as Kermit in transfers.

    Ed.

    Format is fixed length 512 bytes.

    I used FTSV (SPOOL) to copy the file.

    Weeeell, I seem to remember that the Kermit that I once used only liked
    510 byte or variable length records. However, I now use Xmodem
    exclusively. If you like, I'll set WORLD:RE to my personal directory
    and let you copy the versions of XMODEM and CVTARC that always work
    flawlessly for me.

    (CVTARC converts any VMS file into STREAM_LF format, which my XMODEM
    version loves)

    Let me know if you want to try it out...

2604.6use ZMODEM It's faster.VIVIAN::S_GOLDSTEINTue May 30 1989 03:4913
    	Well I've tried all of the a previous methods and none worked
    for me.

    	XMODEM did not work for me at all. BUT I finally got KERMIT
    to work an copied AZComm which uses ZMODEM which is the latest
    THIS works even faster than XMODEM

    If you are in England I could make you a copie of the ARC and AZComm
    files if you want and send it by internal post .

    Let me know you could reach me on 01-234-5935 (site based engineer)

    I'd like to take up your offer. If you would like to mail me details,
    I'm on CALCOT::MCDONALDA.

    I'll try anything. I'll give a ring at some stage and see if I can
    get a floppy up to you.

    OK, I've temporarily unprotected my account. There are two executables
    that you'll need...

    LEDS3::USER6:[ACCIARDI.AMIGA]XMODEM.EXE
    LEDS3::USER6:[ACCIARDI.AMIGA]CVTARC.EXE

    Both files are 95 VMS blocks in size. Copy them to your account and
    define them as commands in your LOGIN.COM file.

    When you get a file that you'd like to download into your Amiga from
    your VMS acount, check it's file format with the DIR/FULL command. If
    the file is in STREAM_LF format, you're all set for an Xmodem transfer.
    If the file is in 510 or 512 byte format, you must first convert it
    with CVTARC.  The syntax is...

    $ CVTARC U OldFile NewFile

    Now you can run Xmodem and begin the transfer. The syntax is...

    $ XMODEM -IS FILENAME ;I=image, S=send, substitute R for receive

    Xmodem will prompt you that it is ready to begin. Just initiate the
    download from your Amiga terminal program and you should be all set.

    Thanks for the files. I've converted ARC023.BIN into stream_lf format.
    I'll download tonight.

    Boy did I have fun trying to copy ARC across to my Ami. In all I
    tried about a dozen times, all through the evening, before finally,
    just before MASH, it came across. I don't think it was XMODEM at
    fault, or the telephone line, I suspect it was the network bouncing
    up and down (i.e. Remote node unreachable).

    I successfully ARC'ed a file that I had previously copied across using
    Kermit. This is very strange. Using Kermit, the .ARC file came across
    without problems, but not arc023.bin.

    Thanks again Ed.

    Unless you are in some type of account that won't let you, I wouldn't
    recommend to anyone downloading a file across DECNET. Copy the file
    to your own area and then download. Much faster and FTSV is helpful
    for those nodes you can't reach reliably.

    Just a suggestion...

    Re .11 and .10, Don't worry, the network group were having
    considerable problems with the net; something to do with a thunderstorm
    that took out our systems.

    Last night I copied MCAD over, twice, without any problems.

    I use FTSV to copy files to my account. I then download to my Ami
    via a home modem.

To anyone still struggling to copy ARC023.BIN onto their Amiga and
get it to work...

Don't bother...

I spent ages trying to figure out what was wrong and gave up.

But if you copy over ARC23.ARC to your VAX account, unpack it and
use the binary contained therein,

Hey presto. This one's fine. I was doing all the right things, but with
a munged file.

    What kind of "VAX" account? VMS? If so, what RMS qualifiers do
    you need?

    Anyone try this under ULTRIX yet?
