2588.0. "AMICUS Disks--Problems/Questions" by LEDS::SKRALY (Sam Skraly, DTN 291-7244) Mon May 22 1989 21:01

I couldn't find a topic to discuss problems/issues associated with the
recently posted AMICUS disks, so I thought I'd create a new topic...

Please REPLY to this topic if you have any problems/questions concerning
the AMICUS public domain disks, which have recently been placed on
    TAPE::.

I'm having trouble with AMICUS 23. This is a disk filled with music, and
several PD music players. Some of the documentation indicates that there
is a way to play the included compositions by double-clicking their
icons. I set the default tool to be Amicus23:Music\PLAY, but when I
double-click, I get a requester asking for another volume name which
isn't discussed at all in the README files.

The only way I can get the music to work is from the CLI, with

        > SMUSPlay\smus.safe music_file instrument_file_location

Has anyone had any better luck with this disk? The README files mention
files which are nowhere to be found--can someone check if the disk is
    complete?

    Thanks,
    Sam

    Hi Sam,

I think you need to create a directory called instruments and put
the instruments in it to stop it asking for the other disk.

    Hope this helps..

I got this done for me when I unZOOed INSTRUMENTS.ZOO. In fact, I used
these instruments to play the scores from the CLI by saying:

        > smus.safe score_name Amicus23:Instruments

When I double-click the music icons, I get a requester asking for volume
"CAMEO-8". CAMEO is the name of the Amiga user group that put this disk
together. Here's an excerpt from the DISKNOTES files. Note that they
refer to some programs which don't seem to be anywhere on the disk...

    Thanks again for the help,
    Sam

CAMEO-?

This disk was released September 1987.

This disk contains:

	1. Scores - Songs that can be played with the public domain player
SMUSPlay provided on this disk. The scores are limited because
they are the only ones I could find that didn't use copyrighted
IFF instruments. If you like the limited selection of music
here, CAMEO suggests you buy one of the commercial music
programs for which several scores are available in the PD.

	2. Sonix-Scores - An arc'd and packed selection of Sonix Scores
	    arranged by John Reuschlein.

	3. DMCS-Scores - A sampling of ready to play DMCS scores.

	4. Information from Digital Visions, where more PD music
programs and utilities can be obtained.

	5. MusicTools - several different tools useful with music files.
Please note that most of these programs must be run from CLI.

	6. Instruments - noncopyrighted instruments used to play the
	    demonstration scores on this disk.

    	7. Piano - a simple Piano keyboard/sound program.
            ^^^^^
(I can't find this anywhere on the disk)

	8. CLIRUN - a program stored in the c directory of this disk
            ^^^^^^
(I can't find this anywhere--this looks like it would answer all my
questions if I could find it--can someone verify that it is missing? I
don't even get a c directory created when I unZOO the disk)

which allows you to play the scores provided from WorkBench.
Read the docs on this one it is useful for other programs
            too!

(Excerpt from another DISKNOTES file)

This disk contains:

	1. Instruments - noncopyrighted instruments used to play the
demonstration scores on this disk. These IFF instruments can
also be used in Instant Music, Deluxe Music, Deluxe Video,
	    SoundScape, and Sonix.

	2. Music - Songs that can be played with the public domain player
SMUSPlay provided on this disk. The scores are limited because
they are the only ones I could find that are not copyrighted
songs. If you like the limited selection of music
here, CAMEO suggests you buy one of the commercial music
programs for which there are many scores are available in the PD.

	3. MCraft2SMUS - This is a program to convert old Pre-Release
version MusiCraft scores to SMUS (an IFF standard). Once in
SMUS they can be imported into Deluxe Music, Sonix, or others.

	4. 1812Overture - The full 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, since
this is over 18 minutes of music complete with Cannons your
computer must have more than 512K of memory to play it.

	5. SMUSPlay - This is a public domain program that plays songs in
the SMUS format. It is used to play the songs in the music
	    directory.

	6. ListINSTR - A handy utility to list the instruments required to
play a song. This is necessary because several programs simply
say "Cannot find instrument", and do not tell you which
	    instrument is missing.
