2575.1 | Wrong Cable ? | ADOMV1::MCGHIE | | Thu May 18 1989 02:26 | 8 |
| Have you checked the type of cable you are using to connect the
modem to the computer ?
You typically use a different cable to attach terminals than you do a modem.

Thanks, but I don't think it's that easy. When I put the modem on the VAX,
I just unhooked one of the Scholars that we use every day and plugged it in.
It answered the phone, but never let me log in! I'd swear the modem was bad,
but I've tried it with TWO of them...

2575.3 | Obvious Modem settings etc | ADODEM::MCGHIE | | Thu May 18 1989 20:53 | 18 |
| Hmmm,
of course you could have TWO dead modems, murphy's law etc. However if
both of them behave in the same manner, then I suppose it's more likely
that the problem is in the modem setup.
Baud rate, parity etc ok on the modem port, i.e. the same as the VAX
port you were testing with ? Did anything at all come back from the
VAX, even garbage ?
Are there any indicator leds on the front of the modem ? And if so what
are they and which were illuminated ?
I have done a fair amount of mucking aronud with modems over the last
couple of years, and they can be sooo frustrating !

2575.4 | Dirty Little Signals | MEDDLE::ANUSZCZYK | | Fri May 19 1989 13:47 | 26 |
| Hmmm,
A couple of years ago I had to interface a Racal-Vadic 1200 Baud
modem to a Amiga 1000 (remember those!). I had the exact same problem
that you reported. It turns out that the 1000 wanted to see pin
five or six high (I forget which one) before it would receive anything.
I tested this by connecting and pretending I was logging in even
though I could not see anything. Once I was pretty sure I was logged
in I hungup the phone and called an operator to see if my job was
now disconnected (virtual terminals were enabled). It was!!
The solution was to jumper pin 20 to pin (5 or 6) so that the
1000 would now see the modem as active. Oh yea, what are these
pins you might ask. Good question... I think they break down to:
Pin 1 ... Chassis ground
Pin 2 ... Transmit
Pin 3 ... Receive
Pin 5 ... RTS (Ready-to-send) from modem
Pin 7 ... signal ground
Pin 20 ... DTR (Data-Terminal-Ready)
Pin 22 ... Ring Indicator
Of course this is all from memory soooo...
Good luck

| re .-1
That just might be it! I'll sure check it out and see. Now if I could just
come up with a breakout box...
Thanks all,
