2563.0. "Laser printers - question time" by NZOV01::MCKENZIE (Diehard the hunter) Mon May 15 1989 17:05

Ok - I have a couple of quick questions folks...

I have been offered the opportunity to purchase a panasonic
laser printer and it started me thinking about laser printers
    for the Amiga

o What (if any) special hardware is req to hook a laser printer
      to the Amiga?
o What printer drivers can be used for laser printers?
o What software packs are reccommended to get the most out of
a laser printer (digitizing, postscript etc)
o What sort of price is reasonable these days for such a printer?
o What mem requirements are there for such a printer? (I only
have an A500 expanded to 1Meg)

    Cheers

    Phil

2563.1a few answersSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterMon May 15 1989 18:5620
I only have a few answers:

special hardware: none, provided the printer supports a centronics
parallel part or a serial port (nearly all do).

printer drivers: I use the HP LaserWriter driver, since my printer
emulates that device. I'm not sure what other drivers are available.

software: I use AmigaTeX, Express Paint 3.0, Dr. T's music software
and ProWrite 2.0. Other software is also available and works well with
laser printers; this is simply my selection.

price: list price, quantity one, from a retail store with 1 week
delivery, is abut $3500. This is for a printer that supports
PostScript and contains the Apple LaserWriter II fonts.

memory: no special requirements, unless you want to draw large
pictures. With enough memory you can draw a full-resolution picture
    with Express Paint.

John - what about digitizing - what are the results like?

do they look computer drawn ?

PS: Thank you for your answers - very helpful

You won't be printing PostScript files directly unless the laser
printer is a PostScript-compatible laser printer. Typically, PostScript
compatibility adds another $1500-2000 to the price of a printer
    - if the optional board is available.

    re: .2---Sorry, I don't have a digitizer.

re: .3---I'm sure it varies with the model, but for the printer I
bought the PostScript increment wasn't that large.
