2548.0. "Keep AMIGA conferences?" by MSBIS1::LANDINGHAM (Guy M.,BXB1-1/F11,293-5297) Tue May 09 1989 12:14

As of late, I have been "hosting" the AMIGA_USENET and AMIGA_TECH notesfiles.
As most of you probably know, the VAXmail Usenet news distribution
from ROLL and ASHBY have been discontinued. There is currently an effort
underway to distribute news throughout the company in a manner similar to the
original, i.e. known distribution sites.

I will probably be losing my ID (and disk space) on MSBIS soon and am wondering
if there is any interest in maintaining these conferences. They served as a
convenient place to store old Usenet postings for later reference, but have
been inactive since the VAXmail distribution was discontinued (they were set
up to receive postings via VAXmail.)

Is anyone interested in taking over these conferences?

Thanks.

There is now a VMS version of a news reader available that I read about
in ROLL::USENET. I haven't used it much at all yet (been busy!), but it
looks pretty good. You can grab a copy from MDKCSW::DUA2:[VNEWS] and
try it out!

    Since there has been very little (read: none) response, these
    conferences will be discontinued. Anyone who wants to grab a copy
    of the conference files (AMIGA_USENET and AMIGA_TECH) for archival
    purposes should contact me soon.

    Just a thought...

    In a while it looks as if there will be a method to do batch
    extractions uning the VMS News Reader. Would it be useful to have
    someone do this is batch nightly and put them in the notes
    conference? That way we are back to the old way, Notes is a
    little more friendly when looking back and researching etc...

    I do prefer the VAXnotes style more than the USENET style. So,
    I would like to see the link resurrected. But, alot of the old
    notes could be deleted.

    looks like you're starting to get responses...

    I've used VNEWS for a while, it's great, much better than getting
    blasted over quota by usenet mailings. But, if I ever go on a
    trip or vacation that will mean that I won't be able to read
    the stuff before it gets deleted by the server. It would be really
    great if it was stashed in a notesfile somewhere. Please consider
    keep those notesfiles alive.

    For me, these conferences are KNOW-HOW-RESOURCES !. I'm a new Amiga-

    a lot of other new users) chance to learn quick about our new

    So, please keep them alife

    RE: -.*:

    I agree, keeping these notefiles for reference materials is a nice
    idea; but, as I stated in .0, I will be losing this ID/disk space
    in the near future, so the issue isn't just the loss of the old
    type of distribution.

    I have received mail indicating that it should be possible to maintain
    these notesfiles using the new distribution method (VNEWS?). I
    hope that someone can set this up on their node.

    For anyone who wants to copy the existing conferences, they're at:

    	MSBIS""::USE$NET:AMIGA_USENET.NOTE,AMIGA_TECH.NOTE

    They're rather large so please try to limit copying to after hours.
    FTSV would be a good idea. I'll try to put off deleting them as
    long as possible. If anyone has problems copying, let me know.

    Thanks.

    Although I don't have the disk space to maintain these or upcomming
    notes,I would be very interested in the mechanism that copied the ole
    mails into the conference. This way we'll have something to hack
    at if the shining knight with a RA81 comes by and saves our day.
    I'll try to find a quiet and large disk, but being a temporary employee
    doesn't help things.

    Good news,

    AMIGA_TECH and AMIGA_USENET have a new 'home'.
    They are now at FRAIS2::AMIGA_TECH and FRAIS2::AMIGA_USENET.

    I'm working on procedures to get the regular postings of these
    newsgroups onto FRAIS2:: and add them into these conferences
    to keep these KNOW-HOW resources alife.

    So, modify your notebook and enjoy it.

    But please give me some time to learn about VNEWS and the other
    stuff, write the batch-procedures .....(or are there any existing
    ...) and in some weeks these notes may be (FULL)filled with high-
    quality informations.

    Hope i have enough disk-space.

    can anybody point me to an address, where i can register the
    conferences so that they are in the EASYNOTES.LIS ??

Hi folks,

it's going on. The Status as of today:

The older conferences (from MSBIS::) are now on:
   FRAIS2::AMIGA_USENET         old comp.SYS.amiga postings until MAR/JUN-89
   FRAIS2::AMIGA_TECH old (and new) comp.sys.amiga.TECH postings

(as remarked in .12)
--------------------

The NEW conferences are:
   FRAIS2::AMIGA_BINARIES       comp.BINARIES.amiga postings
   FRAIS2::AMIGA_SOURCES        comp.SOURCES.amiga postings
   FRAIS2::AMIGA_SYS            comp.SYS.amiga postings STARTING WITH 15-JUN-89

Hit KP7 to add them to your notebook.
-------------------------------------

I'm working on the batch-procedures for the total automation of extracting
update and insertion of usenet-postings into these conferences.

Status: - Extract (via VNEWS) and Insert (via USENOTES) is OK !
        - Batch-procedure for the above; Test-Phase
        Estimated end-of-write/test = next thursday 8^)

        There should nothing lost, because during the test-phase i
        run the procedures interactive each day.

2548.25rename of FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYSFRSOLD::ZIMMERMANNWer von Euch Kerls ist KowalskiMon Mar 12 1990 00:5732
Hi friends,

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS becomes larger and larger... Last year i thought i could
handle one complete year of SYS-postings, but the notesfile is now more
than 100,000 blocks and a typical USENOTES-run is about 9 - 18 hours
depending on the size of the extracted postings. So if there is a problem
anywhere (extracting via net, or one of the rare batch/crash problems on
FRSOLD) there is no more chance to resubmit the usenotes-run, catch the
next days postings, USENOTES them and so on.. to keep the sequence of the
notesfile similar to comp.sys.amiga.

So i decided the following:

        1.) rename the ACTUAL FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS to FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_1
        2.) create a 'new' FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS

        if necessary rename the AMIGA_SYS to AMIGA_SYS_n when the file
        reached an 'unhandy' size.

This action will be done on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14th, at 1900 Central
European Time  =  0100 p.m  U.S. eastern-time.
Please give me 1 hour time to rename, create and backup all the
conference-files (mean keep the fingers away, so i don't have to stop
the notes-server :-) ;-) :-{] :-| :-)

Any comments or suggestions about this??

So long and see 'ya in a fresh FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS

Ralf
====
2548.26 FRSOLD::ZIMMERMANNWer von Euch Kerls ist KowalskiWed Mar 14 1990 13:3031
It's done,

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_1 are the usenet comp.sys.amiga postings from June/July
                     1989 up to 13/14-Mar-1990.

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS is the continuation from 14/15-Mar-1990 on. Maybe the
                     conference is 'handy' for the next 6 months.
                NOTE : this will be the OFFICIAL AMIGA_SYS as registered
                       in EASYNOTES.LIS

It seems that i have the disk-space for a next year with ALL of our usenet-
conferences.! :-) Nothing is lost since they're started on DUSTER:: and
MSBIS::. For the complete history of the usenet-postings read topic 2548.*

I suggest to make the following modifications to your notebooks:

    Notes> set entry AMIGA_SYS /file=FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_1
    Notes> set entry AMIGA_SYS /name=AMIGA_SYS_1

and then

     Notes> add entry AMIGA_SYS /name=FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS

this should enter the 'new' AMIGA_SYS and keep the 'old' AMIGA_SYS
as AMIGA_SYS_1 with the original seen/unseen-status.

Enjoy,

2548.27new organisation of usenet-conf.FRSOLD::ZIMMERMANNFri Aug 17 1990 04:3187
Hi noters,

Again .....It's time for a small reorganisation of the Amiga-related
UseNet-conferences. The following actions will be done today:

        1.) rename the ACTUAL FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS to FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_2
        2.) create a 'new' FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS for the actual notes

        3.) rename the ACTUAL FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH to FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH_1
        4.) create a 'new' FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH for the actual notes

Then the conference-overview will look like this:

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_1 are the usenet comp.sys.amiga postings from June/July
                     1989 UP TO 13/14-Mar-1990.

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_2 is the continuation from 14/15-Mar-1990 on UNTIL
                     17/18-Aug-1990

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS is the continuation FROM 17/18-Aug-1990 on.

                NOTE : this will be the OFFICIAL AMIGA_SYS as registered
                       in EASYNOTES.LIS

FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH_1 are the usenet comp.sys.amiga.tech postings
                     UP TO 17/18-Aug-1990.

FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH is the continuation FROM 17/18-Aug-1990 on.

                NOTE : this will be the OFFICIAL AMIGA_TECH as registered
                       in EASYNOTES.LIS

Total of 7 files, 570834/570834 blocks.

FACT IS: I cannot spent MORE than ONE RA81 for the conferences. An RA81
has a total of 891,072 Blocks. I need 50,000 to 100,000 Blocks for
the extract.

So we have to decide in some months or so, which conferences we don't need
anymore.

I suggest to make the following modifications to your notebooks:

    Notes> set entry AMIGA_SYS /file=FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS_2
    Notes> set entry AMIGA_SYS /name=AMIGA_SYS_2

    Notes> set entry AMIGA_TECH /file=FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH_1

this should enter the 'new' AMIGA_SYS/TECH and keep the 'old' AMIGA_SYS/TECH
as AMIGA_SYS_2/TECH_1 with the original seen/unseen-status.

2548.29next reorg ...FRSOLD::ZIMMERMANNFri Jan 11 1991 16:4743
Hi friends,

According to the usenet comp.sys.amiga.* reorg i picked up several
of the new newsgroups and put them into VAXnotes-conferences in the
known way.

As everybody knows there are SOME disk-space-problems on FRSOLD.
One RA81 for "non-work-related" stuff must be enough :-)
So i used the chance to pass some stuff from which I THINK (my personal
opinion) which eats to much disk-space in FRSOLD's NOTES$LIBRARY.

Due to this and talking with other Amigos i created the following new
conferences:

FRSOLD::AMIGA_MISC              - comp.sys.amiga.misc
FRSOLD::AMIGA_PROG              - comp.sys.amiga.programmer
FRSOLD::AMIGA_REVIEWS           - comp.sys.amiga.reviews
FRSOLD::AMIGA_INTRO             - comp.sys.amiga.introduction
FRSOLD::AMIGA_APPL              - comp.sys.amiga.application
FRSOLD::AMIGA_DATACOMM          - comp.sys.amiga.datacomm

The older conferences are still there:

FRSOLD::AMIGA_SYS*              - comp.sys.amiga
FRSOLD::AMIGA_TECH*             - comp.sys.amiga.tech
FRSOLD::AMIGA_HARD              - comp.sys.amiga.hardware
FRSOLD::AMIGA_USENET            - comp.sys.amiga  VERY OLD !

It seems that there comes still a lot of traffic over the
comp.sys.amiga, so it makes sense to follow them for the next
weeks. If there is a need i rename the actual AMIGA_SYS to
AMIGA_SYS_3 to speed up the USENOTES run.

I hope everybody supports my efforts..... by doing the necessary
modifications in their notebook..... and read the notesfiles.

Uuups i forgot, a happy new year to all.

    Hi,

    due to the increasing disk-space-problems on the notes-disk (RA81)
    i copied AMIGA_USENET to another disk!

    To access AMIGA_USENET (the very old conference) modify your notebook
    in the following way:

    Notes> set entry amiga_usenet /file=frsold::is$sys:[notes$library] -
           _amiga_usenet

    Ok , i would like to collect some opinions about the AMIGA_USENET
    conference: anyone need this (the last entry is from Jun-1989)
    	   	can we get rid of it (let's say in some weeks/months)?
    		can anyone provide a new home?

    send me mail or reply here,

    Ralf
