2506.0. "Battlehawks 1942" by SCUBA::WILTSHIRE (Dave Wiltshire - CSSE Europe) Tue Apr 25 1989 15:26
I recently purchased the game 'Battlehawks 1942' and thought I would
share my impressions with those interested in flight simulators.
The scenario is the Pacific during 1942 when a number of critical
battles were underway between the U.S. and Japan. You can choose
to fly for either side on a variety of missions.
The games comes on two disks and is not copy protected. You have
to enter the code name of a plane as defined in the user guide.
Apparently this game is a port from the IBM PC/Clone world, and
I think it shows.
Bad Points:-
o No Joystick Support (Mouse or Keyboard only)
o No takeoff or landing phase to the game. You start at around
10,000' and end when the mission is complete.
o The 'action window' i.e. through the windscreen, is rather small.
o I don't think the flight envelopes of the aircraft are very
realistic.
o No 'spotter plane' mode. Views from inside the cockpit only
except when in camera mode (this isn't very good).
Good Points:-
o Nice sound effects
o Some of the grahics (buring ships, aircraft, parachutists) are
quite good.
o Animation is smooth when there are not too many moving objects
on the screen.
o Instructions for installation on a hard disk are supplied
- not that I've got one :-(
Overall: A nice shoot 'em up, but for simulator fans it comes miles
behind Falcon......
Anyone else got any comments on Battlehawks 1942 ?
-Dave.
