2464.1 | Fingers crossed | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Support your right to arm bears | Wed Apr 12 1989 01:53 | 12 |
| Hi...
Do you know if a PAL compatible version is available...Ive been
looking forward to buying this game for some time now .... ever
since I saw it in a brochure kindly forwarded to me by another noter...
I am at the bottom of the world so I am unable to phone (well I
could - would cost me a fortune though) and I have not recieved
any replies to the various letters I have written to Cinemaware...
sigh...last thing I want is to pay NZ prices on it in a few months
time...

where ninjas are throwing stars at you?

2464.3 | Game...set...& MATCH! | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Diehard the hunter | Sun Jun 18 1989 17:20 | 24 |
| Well - I finally conceded and purchased the game a couple of days
ago - I became Shogun at around 11:00pm last night...
As usual, Cinamaware's graphics were great, but once again, another
Cinamaware game full of silly text screens between most activity.
I spent most of the time "Touching my sword hilt" (pressing one
of the mouse buttons) to continue. Because of this and the silly
loading systems they use (the documentation says the more memory
your system has the SLOWER IT PERFORMS...at least it has a game
save/restore feature and can be installed on a hard disk) I dont think
I'll purchase any more Cinamaware Games...
I participated in all encounters except the Ninja attacks - for
some reason, I'd get messages saying "Ninja Attacking" and when
I went immeadiatly to my main player (lord) - there was ZIP! Not
once in the entire game did I get to combat these Ninja...spent
a large amount of time defending my castles and crushing the enemy
armies after they refused to form alliances with me...
I'll post a couple of hints here if anyone is interested?
Cheers
Phil

2464.4 | How do you beat the ninjas? | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Diehard the hunter | Tue Jun 20 1989 23:16 | 9 |
| Hey Jeff - Just being playing LOTRS as Yoritomo and for the first
time was attacked by Ninja's - could you supply spoilers on how
to beat them please...I had captured all of Honshu and most of Kyushu when
I was attacked and killed - have to start again cos the kit wipes
the saved game when you get killed....
Thanks in advance

2464.5 | Seiging castles? | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | Diehard the hunter | Wed Jul 05 1989 23:59 | 43 |
| Jeff...Thanks for the info you mailed me...
re: My ninja question/problem
I won the game playing Yoshitsune's character but have yet to win
playing as Yoritomo. Yoshitsune's character is a purely strategic
character and it is possible to avoid the ninjas by simply hoping
they wont turn up. If they do attack a message "Ninja Atacking"
appears at the bottom of the screen. If you ignore this message
you either get the message "Ninja failed" appear or you get killed.
Playing as Yoritomo you must participate in evey arcade sequence that
Yoritomo comes across...these include NINJA ATTACKS plus...
Castles beseiged/Enemy encounters etc
This however does NOT apply to the rest of Yoritomo's generals unless
you specifically request it. EG: if a general arrives at a castle and
you click onto that general and force hime to siege the castle, then
you must go through the arcade sequence. If however you leave him
alone, he may/will make the decision [to seige the castle] on his own.
Now for the next question. Is there a particular strategy for
seiging castles? I have never managed to sucessfully seige a castle
via the arcade sequence...I always run out of time...since one castle
contains the princess I will have to master this strategy to obtain
maximum ranking...
Any and/or help appreciated...
Minor spoiler/warning follows for anyone who plays this game
If you are killed during the game and you have previously saved
your game state, your saved game will be wiped from disk 2 of the game
- provided that it is not write protected.
If however you write protect the disk and you are killed, the saved
game is NOT wiped - but the program seems to set some internal value
which will not allow you to restore the saved game - even on warm boot.
To get around this you have to cold-boot which once complete will
allow you to restore your previously saved game and continue your quest.

2464.6 | Beat the Ninjas! | NZOV01::MCKENZIE | The setting sun casts the longest shadow | Sun Jul 09 1989 18:47 | 36 |
| For anyone interested...
Mild Spoilers on beating ninjas follow...
The Ninja attack in certain patterns...learn the pattern and have
the sword blade ready in the area of attack...generally they throw
stars to the left and right - then straight down the middle...the
middle case is the worst case...I have been killed by a single star
striking me square in the middle of the chest.
The number of stars thrown is minimal...1/2 doz at most...then a
samurai appears at the far end of the corridor and shoots the ninja
with an arrow...sometimes the ninja is killed by the arrow...in
which case you are safe...but you cant find out who hired the
assassin...
In one case however the Ninja was wounded...the text that followed
said that under interrogation he blurted out the name of his
employer...when the game resumes the message "[Employer] Committed
Seppuku" appears at the bottom of the screen. Whether the ninja
is killed or not is entirely up to the program.
There are no buttons to press on the mouse...even though the
instructions suggest that this may be the case...simply moving the
mouse moves the sword.
The speed of the stars seems constant...ie: it has nothing to do
with how strong your current army is or anything...I sucessfully
defended myself against 3 ninja attacks in a single game...
I have now beaten the game playing both Yoritomo's and Yoshitsune's
character...

| forgot to add this awhile back
I finally beat the game playing as Yoritomo...long hard fight !
*** SPOILER ***
I rescued the princess but it took me 3 attempts - it is possible
to kill or wound the princess - either with a misdirected sword/arrow
or by waiting around too long (The enemy samurai start attacking
her)
once you have her you must kill the captain of the guard (the one
with the little yellow helmet)
then high tail it out of there...the princess will follow you once
the captain of the guard is dead...
