2451.0. "arc, uue-->pointers" by 3D::CORKUM (Hey Sports Fans, I love ya') Fri Apr 07 1989 16:08

    I know this has probably been asked before, but I really need the
    following information.

    	where can I get a copy of a Amiga executable arc program ?
    	( I do not have a "C" compiler )

    	what do I do to files that end in .uue ? ( what is this, how
    	do I get a file like this onto my amiga, I heard that this is
    	some type of ascii readable binary. )

    thanks for any answers or pointers to notes (I have found many
    	notes describing how to use cvtarc, arc, etc, but I have been
    	unsuccesful at finding a pointer to the whereabouts of the
        amiga executables.....

2451.1a little help..ELWOOD::PETERSFri Apr 07 1989 17:3517

    	ARC023.arc is on TAPE::USER1:[AMIGA.ARC] . ARC can un-arc its
    self. So download ARC023.ARC to your amiga. Then at CLI
    type "ARC032.ARC". This will run the program. the result should
    be a file called ARC. This new file can be used to un-arc any
    archive ( xxx.arc ).

    	Also in TAPE::USER1:[AMIGA.TOOLS] you can find a copy of
    UUDECODE.exe and UUENCODE.EXE . These are VAX programs. You
    can use UUDECODE.EXE to decode your files on the VAX. Then use
    VMSSWEEP.EXE to ARC your files for download to the AMIGA. Use
    ARC on the AMIGA to unpack your files.

    P.S. all these tools are on TAPE::USER1:[AMIGA...]

    re:-1

    Could you say a bit more about UUDecode.exe, UUEncode.exe, VMSSweep.exe

    What do you mean exactly by "decoding" on the VAX. Is that different
    somehow from doing an ARC Extract on the VMS side?

    What's missing for me is not understanding what the practical
    application of these programs is.

    There seems to be an awfull lot of hidden mistique in the whole
    process going between the Amiga and VAX. I find it really tough
    trying to sort it all out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    	UUEncode/UUDecode started life in the UNIX world. This pair
    of programs has two main funtions. First they allow you to pack
    multiple files into one file ( like ARC, ZOO, and VMS BACKUP ).
    the second thing it does is encode the file so it contains only
    valid ASCII characters. Some networks get mixed up with binary
    files. So the originator UUEncodes a group of files. The reciever
    UUDecodes to files to obtain the original files.

    	ARC and ZOO pack many files into a single file and they compress
    the data. This make one smaller file to download. these programs
    can also tell if the file is corrupted during transmission.

    	VMSSWEEP.EXE is a VAX program that understands ARC format. It
    can pack and unpack files the same way ARC does.

    I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble but VMSSWEEP does understand ARC
    format, but only for EXTRACTION. It can't create an ARC (or any other
    personal computer archive file). Unless the original archive was made
    up of archive files as members.

    There is an ARC.EXE floating around that I've been using for some time.
    It does create archives as well as everything else you can do on the
    PC version.
