MyMenu is the latest entry in the 'WorkBench Menu Bar Modification' frenzy that's been happening lately. If you liked HandyIcons, you'll break out in a rash over MyMenu. Wheras HandyIcons allowed one entire new Workbench menu, and restricted the menu entries to WB programs only, MyMenu... * lets you add as many new Workbench menu items as you can fit in the title bar width. * Parses CLI as well as WB lines. Anything that you could ever conceive of typing in at a CLI or Shell can be parsed as a menu item, with an abbreviated name or keyboard equivalent. * Supports sub-menus in an easy to use fashion. Here's how it works... You build a text file called 'MyMenu.conf' and place it in your s: directory. A sample file is included. Then, just install the 'MyMenu-handler' into your l: directory and the MyMenu program in your c: directory. Run 'MyMenu' anytime in your startup-sequence after the LOADWB command and you'll automagically have a customized Workbench menu bar. MyMenu automatically detaches itself from the current CLI, so you don't need to 'RUN' it or anything. I've been using this for a few weeks now (sorry for not uploading it sooner, but life's been a reel beech lately) and all I can say is that if 1.4 doesn't have a feature like this, it should. The file is NORSE""::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]MYMENU.ZOO and is in STREAM_LF format, so Xmodem it. I think you'll love this one. Ed.

2443.1 | Buggy | MTWAIN::MACDONALD | WA1OMM 7.093/145.05/223.58 AX.25 | Wed Apr 05 1989 23:18 | 8 |
I think it's a bit buggy. Unless you have it set up correctly, it will guru. For example, if you attempt to run ProDraw or ProPage using MyMenu's WB qualifier, the machine crashes. If you use the CLI qualifier, you won't be in the correct directory for those programs unless you have already CDed to the correct directory. I got a tad bit frustrated trying to get it to work correctly. Nice concept though.

Hmmm, I haven't had any problems of that sort. If MyMenu can't parse a particular command, it just throws up a requestor telling that it can't perform that function. Ed.

Ed, thanks for uploading this program! It's everything a workbench menu hacker could ever want (well,almost...) The author mentions a rumor that Workbench 1.4 may have this functionality. John

I hope the 1.4 people at CBM are watching all these clever hacks. I hate to say it, but Workbench has always been an abomination compared to the Mac desktop. It probably has scared many people away from Amiga. I was thinking about posting my own Menu.conf file here. If anyone else wants to we could cross pollinate and maybe come up with the ultimate configuration. Ed.

I'll post mine also. John |
