| I have a different ARC file, but it was apparently set up the same
way. There must be some automatic utility of command procedure
that creates an ARC file with an automatic UNARC command file called
BUILD. In any case the easy way to accomplish your goal is to do
the following:
1) Put BANKN.ARC on a floppy by itself.
2) CD to that floppy
3) Extract the build file using the command
ARC X BANKN BUILD
4) Execute the build procedure using the command
EXECUTE BUILD
The build procedure will automatically extract all files from the
acr file, build any directories required, and rename all the extracted
files to the proper name.

| This is an addition to my previous reply. I didn't have time to
complete it, or to fully read your message.
Was a file named BANKN in BANKN.LIS? If there was make sure you
do a CD to the directory where BANKN is located. (i.e. if the file
BANKN is in the directory BANKN and the floppy is in DF1: use the
command CD DF1:BANKN before you type BANKN). If BANKN is not in
BANKN.LIS it sounds like either you are missing that file or the
instructions telling you to telling you to type the command BANKN
are wrong.
The best thing to do would be to read the BUILD file and see the
commands that executed that did somthing with the file BANKN. You
should be able to determine which file (i.e. FILE01 - FILE31) got
renamed to BANKN and where the BUILD procedure tried to put it.
Otherwise, maybe just give it a fresh start as described in my previous
reply.

2436.3 | No BANKN file present? | LINCON::MGAINES | | Wed Apr 05 1989 15:58 | 8 |
| No there was not a file called BANKN... This is what puzzeled me.
I did look at the build program and could not see a place in it
anywhere, where a BANKN file was renamed or called. I'll take another
look and see tonight.
I will try to rebuild via your earlier instructions, thanks!

2436.4 | MAIN MENU BLOWN. | LINCON::MGAINES | | Thu Apr 06 1989 10:05 | 11 |
| Well, the BANKN.ARC file that has been uploaded is missing the main
menu portion of the program. I finally spotted this by review the
list file. I found another BANKN program on WJG::, its a .zoo file
however... I arced over zoo.arc, and its corrupted with bad headers
all over. Is Zoo.arc what I need to de-arc a zooed program, I noticed
that there are several type ie zoo200.arc zoo125.arc. Which one?
Also does anyone know where one is that is not corrupted? Does anyone
know where a good copy of BANKN is in an ARC file, beside the one
on WJG::?

Sorry I goofed, the BANKN.ARC file I copied came from FF120
on node "TAPE". There is a BANKN.zoo on node "tape" as well, ff163.
Does anyone know if this is corrupt or missing any menus, does anyone
know if its a good download. IF the .zoo file is belived to be good
where do I go to get a copy of Zoo.arc that will decompress this
file? The bad zoo.arc was on node "WJG", (bad headers).

2436.7 | bankn.zoo, where is good zoo.arc? | LINCON::MGAINES | | Thu Apr 06 1989 14:30 | 4 |
| Ok, where do I go to get Zoo to extract the file? The zoo file I
tried to copy had bad headers see .5, thanks?

2436.8 | Maybe wrong type file? | ATLS17::MCDONALD_J | Surly to bed, surly to rise... | Thu Apr 06 1989 15:17 | 13 |
| Are you sure you downloaded ZOO.ARC correctly? The stuff on WJG was uploaded
with Kermit if I remember correctly. It's all in Fixed-length, 510 byte record
format. If you're downloading using XMODEM, you'll need to do a "CVTARC U" on
the file before downloading.
The different ZOO files are just different versions of ZOO. I just downloaded
ZOO200.ARC last night and it works fine. (Of course, you have to de-arc it
once it's on the amiga...)
For BANKN, follow the suggestion of .1 and start over. The build file is
designed to do the de-arcing itself.

2436.9 | didn't work for me. | LINCON::MGAINES | | Thu Apr 06 1989 16:14 | 21 |
|
John, I copied zoo.arc and zoo200.arc using kermit and when I went
to de-arc it it showed bad headers everywhere. I'll try again tonight.
I'm not getting much sleep since I took AMY off your hands...
As far as bankn.arc goes, there's 2 of them on WJG:: one is an .ARC
and the other is .zoo . I copied the bankn.arc and performed the
extract as in .1, it still would not run. When I looked at the listing
provided in the file, it listed BANKN (MAIN MENU) in the listing,
yet no file BANKN was ever extracted via the execution of the build
command. I think it has been trashed.
I will look at the BANKN.zoo tonight, after I get a good Zoo.arc
copy. Maybe I did something wrong in the transfer, although KERMIT
did not indicate any. Yes, yes I'm still using Kermit...
I'm still waiting on that batch of goodies from my local AMIGA
contacts, when they come in I'll let ya know what I get.

2436.11 | bankn.zoo missing main menu too. | LINCON::MGAINES | | Fri Apr 07 1989 09:28 | 14 |
| ooop's, I found them on TAPE::, I downloaded the bankn.arc 1st and
executed its build file, there was supposed to be a bankn file that
was to be placed in the bankn (dir), this was supposed to be the
main menu. The main menu was not present. I tried the bankn.zoo
file from fred fish 163 and it too is missing the main menu portion
of the program. Does anyone know what I'm talking about here?
If you execute the inst file and them read the general instructions
it lists all the files that should be present and gives a brief
description of what they do. The first file mentioned is BANKN (MAIN
MENU). It is not present on either the .arc or .zoo files on node
tape. Can someone upload this portion if they have it? Thanks.

2436.12 | The drawer is the Main Menu | CGOFS::CADAMS | Clint Adams - Calgary, Canada | Fri Apr 07 1989 12:48 | 20 |
|
There is no main menu in the Bank'n distribution. What the author
intended was to have all the executables (ckbook, eoy, reports,
information, etc) and their icons in the same drawer, this makes
opening the drawer the main menu (sort of).
With the latest version (should be Fish 163 and is version 1.5) he
allows multiple checkbook data files, use the project pull down
and select "select checkbook".
Also, once everything is in the same drawer (just put the
bankn.zoo in the drawer that will be your checkbook and unzoo it,
then execute the build) click on the information icon and read the
help files, the rest should fall into place.
Bank'n is a great little checkbook and an adequate expense/budget
tool.

2436.13 | Try it, you'll like it | MQOFS::LECOMPTE | Hubert Lecompte | Fri Apr 07 1989 13:14 | 56 |
| I have been using BANKN for sometime now and I have never seen
any bankn file. I simply use each of the different icons to select
the operations that I want to do. If you look at the instructions
that came with the package you will see that each part is in fact
an executable program with his icon.
For the problem trying to unarc or un zoo archive files there is
some guidelines you have to follow.
As far I can tell there is two standard used for archiving and
transmitting data. Fixed length and stream line feed.
When transmitting data between the VAX and the Amiga you have a
choice of two different (mainly) standards: Kermit and XModem.
And you also have two different archive programs that may not always
be compatible with your transmissions.
Let me explain.
If you use VMSARC it uses the stream line feed encoding standard
but the ARC on the AMIGA is using the fixed length mode standard
so, even if you transmit everything without errors your file will
not dearc correctly on the AMIGA.
In other words, if you are using ARC on VMS to make sure that the
file you have copied from node XX is good it doesn't mean that it
will be good on the Amiga.
But there is a solution, there is a program available on NODE::
or TAPE:: call CVTARC.EXE that will let you transform an arc file
from one standard to the other. So this way you will be able to
check your archive on vms using VMSARC and then switch it to
the other standard so AMIGAarc will unarc correctly.
But you also have to keep in mind that you must use KERMIT to
transfer that file because it is using the same standard as the
archive.
The same is true for ZOO and XMODEM but the conversion program
is call BILF.EXE.
To summarise:
Using KERMIT (Fixed length mode)
1- Convert your ARC file to fixed length mode using CVTARC on the
VAX.
2- Transfer your file using KERMIT.
3- UNARC your file on the AMIGA.
Using XMODEM (Stream line feed)
1- Convert your ZOO file to stream line feed using BILF on the VAX.
2- Transfer your file using XMODEM.
3- UNZOO on the AMIGA.

2436.14 | reply .12 and .13 | LINCON::MGAINES | | Fri Apr 07 1989 14:06 | 24 |
| Thanks .12 and .13 . I was able to get BANKN on disk ok, yet I
got thrown off course when I read the instructions. They said
I should be able to execute the program by typing BANKN at the
CLI prompt. This does not work, because there is no BANKN file.
My biggest obstacle now is getting familiar with the CLI, and
getting drawers to be displayed with the contents of the drawers
actually inside. I wrote a note regarding my experience this
problem. It started with me running MCAD. I could execute MCAD
from the CLI, yet if I clicked on the disk I only got a trashcan
in the menu. Later I got a note from someone that said I needed
to copy a drawer ico to the directory and rename it to mcad. I did
this and the drawer showed up ok, but still nothing inside when
I clicked on the drawer. John Mcdonald gave me some pretty good
instructions and I haven't gone back to the drawing board yet, I
managed to delete the disk... I'll do it this weekend.
I guess I'll have to figure this problem out, I want to use Icons
for nearly everything, its easier and quicker. My wife and children
would benefit as well. So I'm in ICON school this weekend. Continue
to post tips etc... I read em and need em. Thanks!

| BTW, BANKN.ZOO DOES NOT COME WITH THE BUILD FILE ON FF163, BANKN.ARC
DOES. BANKN.ARC WOULD NOT EXECUTE CHECKBOOK, BUT THE BANKN.ZOO WHEN
DE-ZOOED WORKED OK.
